Had a Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler #17740 installed today.

With the WS 2.5" B-pipe w/Res. this thing almost seems to drone as loud as my 99' did with an all Stillen exhaust with Y pipe. It has a deeper tone but still has the 2200-3000rpm drone. I could tell the power difference right off the bat on the butt. It really pulls through the rpms quicker and doesn't drop as much between shifts. The 17740 is rated for 600cfm and I hoped due to it's size it wouldn't be as loud given the fact that the B has a resonator, but it's still a little to loud for my taste.
The shop that did the install did a very good job; the 2 tips on this muffler are lined up perfectly with the body. But this thing will be coming off by the end of the week and up for sale here. I paid $80 shipped for the muffler and $60 to have it put on. I'd like to get $120 for it. It has all the hangers and piping needed to install and will only cost $10 to $20 to have the pipe welded to the B.

I've got another stock muffler on the way plus the one I have. I plan on starting my mod project today. I hope to have it done by the end of the week. What I'm going to do is run 2.5" pipe into the inlet, cut the tips & piping off exhaust side and have 2.5" pipes installed there as well. As far as internal flow, I'll just have to see if there is anything I can do to bump it up with out destroying it.

The search for a higher flowing muffler that muffles continues...

I had the Dynomax SuperTurbo #17748 installed the other day and I am running a Y-pipe, no cat, 2.5 inch catback w/resonator and mine has ZERO drone. I had other mufflers on my car including a Remus which is quiet, and this is by far the quietest. I think yours drones because you got the smaller one. The 17748 is 18 inches long, therefore it can muffle more sound.

I take back the range and volume of the drone. It's range is from 1.8K-2.5k RPMs and with my 99' you couldn't hear the intake with this you can, so it's not as loud but it definitely is there. My 1st post was right after I got it done, after driving it some more at different speeds I can see the difference

The 17748 is 20" long and so is the 17740, they're also both 4.25"H x 9.75"W. The difference is the 17740 has a 3" inlet and 2 2.5" out. The CFM of the 17748 is 415 and the 17740 is 600. I was also looking at the 17770, which is 5.5"H x 11"W and 20" long with 3" in and out at 563cfm. With it's size that may have been a better choice.
With the 17740 when you look in one of the tips you can see the inlet so it's not as baffled as I thought or it was made incorrectly.

Whose B did you buy and how big is the resonator? Mine is from Warpspeed. I still have the cat but the flow loss there is minimal.
Thanks

Wait about a week before you decide what to do with the muffler.
I got 17748 put on a couple of weeks ago and from what I'd been reading I thought it would be relatively quiet. When I first got it on it was pretty loud but after a few days it had quieted down and after about a week it was pretty good. Must need some time to break in

Thats weird, Id personally use the 22" maganflow resonator but the glasspack resonator works well too. Btw mufflers do somewhat change tone in a week or two. My magnaflow was way too loud when I got it and in a matter of 1-2 weeks it was somewhat baerable but still extremly deep. It drones from 1500-1800rpms only so on the highway you can hear a pindrop but on the streets its anoying sometimes.

Ofcourse, click on the superturbo emblem on the site I provide and you will see. Or here is the link to exactly what im looking at. The 17786 can be used, the piping is 2.5" at the inlet and dual 2.25" out.

let it "break in" for a few weeks and then sell it, maybe you might start liking it

You can see all of the Super Turbo mufflers Dynomax makes Here
I bought mine Here It was shipped the next day and I got it in 2 days, good pricing too.

I think the main problem I'm having is because of the little resonator WarpSpeed uses, it's only 12". I'm going to look into having a larger one installed.
Also this muffler isn't as chambered the way I thought it was, like I said when you look through one of the tips you can see the 3" inlet. I'm going to call Dynomax and ask them about it.

Silly question, this will fit as a direct OEM replacement right? (e.g. everything else stock). I'm looking at getting the DST 17748 to replace the damaged OEM muffler.

Thanks

It's narrower & thinner than stock but it's just as long. You will have to have a pipe bent and welded to the muffler, then have hangers welded on. There are no size issues with fitting it in the stock location. I paid $60 to have the above work done.

NP, How are you feeling BTW?

Oh yea you should have the ins co. replace the stock muffler, their like $450 from the dealer. You can still put an aftermarket on but atleast you'll have a stock one.

I'm feeling a lot better. At least i can move my head around now. Still have a couple weeks of therapy to go though. Thanks for asking

The shop said if i brought in my own muffler they'll install it and refund me the cost. They'll also give me the extra amount that it would have cost to purchase the OEM one. So i might take them up for it.

Is it just one of their 4" round mufflers as seen here
Or should I also think about one of the 6" diameter ones in 18" or 27".
Thanks for the help.

The funny thing is, is that on MagnaFlow's web site they don't list this item. I was only able to find it on the site I linked to above. Hmmm, I hope I can get it locally.

Well when I get home last night my wife tells me she really likes the sound of the exhaust, she said it makes her feel like a bad a$$. She's 36 and 5' 105lbs BTW She also said it is nowhere near as loud as my 99' was. And since she's driving it and likes the sound I'll let it go a while before I do anything.

On the way to work this morning I drove next to her for about 2 miles with my window down and it didn't sound that bad, she even had it in 5th at about 2.2k and it didn't seem that loud. It seems to be breaking in rather well after 2 days. I'll see what I think next week.

Some of the in cabin drone/noise could be from the lack of tips on the muffler. I didn't have any finishers welded on because if I didn't like it and wanted it off I felt that would be a waste of cash. While I know tips don't change the sound of the exhaust the outlets on the muffler are well behind the back bumper and that may cause sound and vibration to reflect back off the body and enter the cabin. If it continues to break-in any more I'll get some tips for it. And to be honest with you, as long as the power is there I don't care if it sounds like a rice fart can pumped through an amp outside as long as I don't hear it inside. The tone is nice and low though

I have Dynomax SuperTurbos on my other car (a 2000 Grand Prix). Just keep in mind that after break-in they do get louder over time. I think it has something to do with the fact that they have fiberglass in them and it eventually burns off ?

I had more work done today and wow what a difference. Instead of having the resonator that came with the WS B-pipe removed for a larger one I had it moved further forward toward the cat and had another 12" resonator installed behind it, this second one is a glass pack resonator. I also had the DST 17740 removed and had a Flowmaster 50 series Delta Flow put on. For the tip I got a single to dual stainless steel unit put on, it's very similar looking to the PowerTech PT1004 tips.

This setup has done the trick. I probably wasted some cash on another muffler because it was almost as loud as the DST before the second resonator was put on, but I finally left the place with a on my face. It has a nice low rumble in the 1.5-2.5k band there is some resonance but it's by no means obtrusive. It sounds like a car like this should sound. I don't need to touch the stereo to cover any noise/drone and I don't need to talk louder for people to hear me on the head set for my cell phone. That and I don't "feel" any power loss. I may try going back to the DST sometime in the future because as many of you have said large resonators are the key, hell a straight through muffler might not sound bad with this set up.

Thanks for all your advice guys

Juice,

Where did you get the remus? I keep looking but cannot locate any. Is it a straight through? how did it sound! Thanks in advance!

Re: Had a Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler #17740 installed today.

I had a 17731 super turbo and had it didn't drone but when I accelerated, Wow, loud! You could cruise and not hear it but blip the throttle and .....
How loud? Well I had a Z06 blow my doors off just to make a point. I turned left onto this road, he turned right out of the gas station in the right lane, as I hit the gas the sound caused him to look over, hold steady with me then take it to 85 or so in a 45! I was not even trying, just taking my time. I put the stock on the next day! I do not need that kind attention!

The search for a higher flowing muffler that muffles continues... [/B][/QUOTE]
