Key Fob

I have been to the local Niss dealer and they were trying to get me an extra fob for my car. I know the Mgr. so he said he would snag one for me. The bummer was he couldn't get it programmed and he kept setting off another Max on their lot.
Maybe he didn't know how to program it. He later said that the serial number on that particular fob didn't match mine.
I just thought he didn't know what he was doing.
Is this serial number thing true or is there something more to getting a replacement fob?
He has another he will score for me, but it was contingent on the serial number. I was close to saying, just give me any fob and I'll make it work; I figured you guys know more about this than some dealers do anyway.
Got any thoughts and instructions on how to program the fob?

I do like the fact that you can turn off the horn, according to the instructions on the back of the fob itself when you lock/unlock. Good thinking to put that there by Nissan.
Anyone know anything, though, on the fobs being universal?
There is a procedure for adding a new FOB, or having the car recognize, a new entry system mechanism for a car. It is outlined in the ESM.
I tried cutting-and-pasting, but that wouldn't work. Sorry.
The dealer should know how to add a new or additional FOB to your car. Have him look at the ESM.

First I'd make sure the NEW key fob is from the right model year, I don't think anything else matters (maybe I'm wrong.) Make sure you have BOTH key fobs with you when you do this. I'm familiar with this process since my 95 Max used to "forget" who I was and I had to re-program it every couple of months.
----
To enter the ID code, follow this procedure.
Entering "Setting mode":
(1) Close and lock all doors.
(2) Insert and remove the key from the ignition more than six times within 10 seconds. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash twice.) At this time, the original ID codes are eliminated.
ID code entry:
(3) Turn ignition key to "ACC" position.
(4) Push lock button on the new remote controller once (for example, if door is locked using the remote controller during this ID code entry enable state, a new ID code can be entered). At this time, the new ID code is entered. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash twice.)
Additional ID code entry
(5) If you need to activate additional remote controllers, unlock the driver's door, then lock again with interior door lock ****.
(6) Push lock button on the additional new remote controller once.
(7) This ID code entry enable state and setting mode remain until the driver's door is opened.
NOTE
If you need to activate more than two additional new remote controllers, repeat the procedure "Additional ID code entry" for each new remote controller. If the same ID code that exists in the memory is input, the hazard warning lamps will flash twice but the entry will be ignored. Entry of maximum four ID codes is allowed and any attempt to enter more will be ignored. Any ID codes entered after termination of the "setting mode" will not be accepted. Additionally remote control signals will be inhibited when an ID code has not been entered during the "setting" mode.
