Awesome! When you get your motor apart, can you weigh the pistons compared to stock?

Yep...I'm going to weigh everything I can take apart...bolts and all. It won't be until my 36K bumper-bumper warranty is up, though. I'm just collecting parts right now...

There are a few more pictures posted.

The original price was $900 but the oil filter assembly had been broken off which means I have to replace the entire bottom cover. So the guy was kind enough to knock $100 off the price. I paid $800 plus tax for the motor.

Was the engine already removed? I hope that broken filter assembly wasn't why it had a short life.

Looks like you'll have some extra parts to sell: Injectors, coils, manifold, TB, motor mounts, exhaust manifolds/precats, misc. sensors, crank, rods, oil pump, heads, valve covers, etc... You could damn well get half or more of your money back selling it all.

How much for the crank/rods?

Are you planning on going with an lightweight flywheel or aftermarket clutch, since they're staring you in the face?

I am not ordering any more parts right now. No flywheel or clutch is even made for our cars.

Also, pistons doesn't seem like something that a dealer would typically stock.. Hope you can get them in on time.

Finally, what does a full set of pistons and rings cost?

I would think that generally you dont do a compression test on just one cylinder, especially if that cylinder shows up as 0psi

I guess there's no way a 350Z flywheel would fit, eh?

No way...350Z flywheel is some HUGE dual mass unit.

I doubt the two are similar due to FWD vs. RWD, however that sure looks similar to '95+ Maxima. I'm sure if he sends his spare into UR, they'd make one for you guys.

Actually the Maxima flywheel is the dual mass one. It looks very odd. I'll get a picture when the tranny comes off. And there is no spare because the new motor has a flex plate on it which is for an auto.

What I really wanted to know was what was the compression on the other cyllinders, but logically one can't ask that without knowing that a test on the other cyllinders was done in the first place, unless one were to make an assumption. Assumptions aren't valid in my profession.

So by asking if he'd done one, I accomplished the real goal of finding out what the compression was in one query. Query optimization is extremely important in my profession.

Furthermore, if you do a compression test on one cyllinder and it shows zero compression, you're pretty much relegated to rebuilding the engine anyway. One might say "Why bother?"

So is the 350Z...I'll dig up some pics.

One of my mags swapped in a UR flywheel and it was pretty massive.

If the UR flywheel would work that would be awesome because it is only 5 pounds.

edit:
Actually I just found this http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/infiniti_g35.html .

That is probably the right flywheel for us too. I wonder how much it weighs. But the pricetag is not attractive at all.

That is crazy expensive. The most i ever saw for a flywheel was 550 for an UR flywheel for the 2001 max. but around $850. thats is crazy. again it is nopi so.

Yeah, but wait until you see what they had to go through to make it "fit" what the OEM flywheel left behind.

I don't know what dual-mass is, however that was one THICK flywheel. UR had to make it just as thick, however they removed all but the outer ring and made it a cone down to the mounting bolts. Pretty trick looking piece IMO, but I'm betting it was a R&D nightmare and the reason for the additional cost.

Oops...JWT not UR

Here you go SR20DEN:
Unfortunately, that math also shows Nissan engineers the Z flywheel has to be 25.5 pounds to damp things properly. That doesn't seem overly heavy when a quick zing of the throttle unleashes 274 lb-ft of torque, but when we replaced that 25 pounds with 13 pounds of Jim Wolf aluminum flywheel, we were amazed what we had been missing.

Free-revving in neutral is just silly now. The lighter flywheel frees horsepower once used for accelerating its 25 pounds. In high gears, the difference is negligible, but in first and second gear, where each mile per hour means many more revolutions of that 25-pound flywheel, the difference is surprising. Hard-driving fast shifts are now easier and smoother, but cruising around, revs actually drop so quickly between shifts that lazy gearwork makes you drive like a clutch monkey.

Ok...DAVEB says they are different part numbers and "appear" somewhat different from the diagrams.

Someone *cough*SR20DEN*cough* needs to send JWT their flywheel, so they can make one.

That's what DAVEB said, however he said he was pretty sure the 350Z was thicker.

Also, any comment?

It's also more than Matt paid for the motor, schit headers cost more than he paid for the motor.

If I ever start using the juice I think I'll buy a motor and build it up a little then do a swap. That way I'll still have a perfectly good motor as a backup. It would also be nice to buy a 96' 300ZX and drop a built up 3.5 in it, talk about a beast.

I hope your lucky Matt and #2's piston is just burned through and the cylinder is still good. I don't envy you this weekend. If I didn't have a wedding to go to tomorrow I would have offered to help, even as a gofer it'd be good to learn some things.
