"SERVICE ENGINE SOON"

I have a Y2K GLE and the light came on for a couple days. I diconnected the battery overnight to reset. Three days later came on again. Figured there was a problem and made an appointment to take her in and the light went out the night before I was to take it. Seems to be running fine. 63,000 miles and coils all changed recently. Is there a chance she is still holding a code ???? Hate to take her in and spend $$ for nothing. Any suggestions

have autozone pull the code for free or take it to a local mechanic. most likely the mechanic will charge less for it but autozone is the way to go. since the coils were done, i would tend to think oxygen sensor since they have an high failure rate on some 2k and 2k1. only way to know is to have it pulled though. there are some codes that wont trip the cel and are just stored as well.

Did you check the gas cap? If its not tight then it will throw a light.

I've read about that happening to folks on here before. A guy at work told me he was taking in his wife's Pontiac today b/c of a SES light but there were no symptoms. I told him about the gas cap thing too... he tightened it but the light didn't go out immediately. When he came back from the shop he said the computer code showed the gas cap had been loose at 2 different times in the last 120 days.

Good luck!

I've heard of cap loose causing this as well. I'd bet it's an O2 sensor. Autozone can pull the code. I went to two when I had the problem. First could not get a reading from my computer, but the other autozone (with a higher quality reader) had no problem. Resetting by disconnecting battery would only fix it for a few hundred miles, then the light would go back on. So I changed sensor and have been good for 15k.

SkoorbMax,
How much did the sensor cost? Was it easy to replace? According to Autozone, I have a bad sensor (bank 1 sensor 2 [rear]).
