Its like a fifth gear for your auto tranny! when your at crusing speed turn it off and notice the jump in RPM's.

When the o/d light is on, you are in 3rd gear (locked out of 4th). The transmission will operate normally from a stop and shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd. When it is off, your transmission will shift into 4th.

It locks up third after 3,000 rpm's.......I always drive around town with o/d off........no lag time for shifting in and out of fourth.......burns up more gas, but is also more responsive just cruising....however........don't go on the freeway @ 80 mph and turn it off like some guy suggested...... It'll kill your tranny dood........Peace_

You have 4 gears, O/D is the 4th.

Keep the OD ON at all times

Correct. There is no reason to turn the OD OFF (locked in Third) unless you need to remain in third for some reason (mountain driving etc where tranny is shifting frequently and you need to avoid the wear-n-tear). Keep it in fourth gear and cruise or race. it will do just fine.

I think that might have been a bit confusing. . .

light on "OD Off" . . . means your of IS off . . .no 4th gear
no light means OD is on . . . 4th gear enabled.

let's say this a different way...

normal mode is that the o/d is enabled, as it should be. if you choose to disable it, a light on the dash will remind you that you have disabled it, and that it won't be engaging at high speed. hitting the button again returns you to normal mode, where overdrive will help save your gas when traveling at highway speeds.

less confusing?
