2000 SE oil quantity
#1
I have found that 4.5 qts put the level slightly over the full mark on the dip stick. Yesterday I changed it again with just 4 qts and it was just up to the full mark.
Anyone else have the same experience, or are there tools left in my oil pan ) ?
Just talked with a service manager at Nissan and he said the manual (the techs. use) says 2.25 quarts so in the owners manual it was rounded up to 4.5.
Seems they want to sell an extra quart of un-needed oil.
Hummm
Leason learned, 4 quarts is fine with a filter. 4.25 if the engine has just been rebuilt and is bone dry.

I went to Mossy Nissan in San Diego for an oil change and came back a quart low. He gave a similar excuse. Maybe it depends on how long they let the engine fully drain. An oil change should be done on a cool engine so most of the oil is in the pan,

when i got my last oil change, i put in full 5qts of Mobil 1 and it came out to be little bit more than full on the dip stick...and i thought we were only required to use 4 1/4 qts....
well, can't hurt my car for having little bit more oil than i'm suppose to anywayz..

Oil should be changed when the engine is warm. Try pouring oil that is 60 degrees when compared to how warm oil is when it drains out the oil pan. Think of it this way, when your gassing up your car and check your engine oil, how long does it take for the oil to get back into the pan and on the dipstick, not long at all. Are you sure you changed the oil filter, it contains about half a quart or more depending on vehicle.

I asked a local shop this question. He looked in his book and told me the 2K+ maxima's are suppost to have 4.1 quarts of oil. The 1995-1999 uses 3.9 quarts. If your oil is full, it really sucks. I'd first put in 4 quarts. Then you can just add oil in little increments until it is full.

Overfilling of the oil pan can have negative results; the crankshaft counter weights can dip into the oil whipping it up, overcoming anti-frothing additives. This results in frothed oil limiting the load bearing capacity (film strength if you will) of the oil. Not to mention the excess oil thrown onto cylinder walls that the oil control rings were not designed to handle.
