Maxima 2000 GLE - Spark Plugs
Maxima 2000 GLE - Spark Plugs
I have a Maxima GLE 2000 with 99,000 kms. What replacement spark plugs does anyone recommend, please? Can I use plugs that are less costly than the platinum ones?
Anyone recommend a reliable service place in North East Toronto - Agincourt or Willowdale area.
Thanks

i just replaced mine at 52k
Just get platinum plugs so you don't have to go through the pain of replacing them so often. Your stock plugs are platinum and the recommended replacement cycle is 100K miles, but many of us replace them between 45K to 60K miles.
NGK PFR5G-11 is the model number for the stock platinum spark plugs used in '00/'01 Maximas and Courtesy Nissan sells a set of 6 for $57.00. You can get them even cheaper on eBay where they go up for auction a few times every few weeks. It was worth it to wait for eBay availability.
I changed the spark plugs myself at 67K miles. I had all the right tools, and the front three were easy to do, but those back three...WHAT A PITA (Pain In The A**)!!!
First I thought it wouldn't be so bad since the back one closest to the passenger-side wheel was okay, except for some stretching on my part. But those last two plugs were a pain to get to. I had to remove the bar of my FSTB to get access to those plugs in the back.
For those who want to do it themselves, just go here for a write-up with pictures:

This write-up is for '00 and '01 Maximas, but '02s and '03s should be similar.
Get the plugs from eBay, be perpared with the proper tools, and be prepared to stretch your legs. But after it gets done, you'll be glad you did it yourself and saved some dough. It's not a hard thing to do, but thank goodness we only need to change them every 60K miles!
Peace.

I went with the stock plugs from nissan and just replaced at 58k. The front are a breeze. You need just a socket set (including a spark plug socket), and some extension bars. I bought a pack of 3 extensions (short, medium, long) and found that for the number 5 cylinder in the back I actually had to use the medium and the short stacked on top of each other to get my ratchet back there
Take your time and you can do them yourself. The only extra work I had to do was to get at cylinder 5 and perhaps 3 (two of the back ones), and that work was using an adjustable wrench to slightly unscrew the two throttle cables so that I could lift them out of the way. You can do this in under an hour and save some good money. It was a couple weeks ago for me and first time I've done plugs.
