I changed to synthetic the first oil change. 800miles. and been synthetic since.. will post when I break something. as far as the car goes. no payment til 2001 may actually hurt more then help.. the value of your car would go down while U havn't paid a dime on it. so in the end U might be upside down on your loan vs the value of the car. but Hey its your choice. Now as far as the sticker price goes. Invoice on that SE with C&C, Bose, Auto should be around $24,400 or so. Good Luck..

I also waited until my second oil change.
I did a lot of research on the Internet, and could never find a definitive answer. It would appear that with recent model cars there is no "break-in" issue with the seals that requires normal oil for a period. Many cars (including BMWs, Porsches and Corvettes) come from the factory with synthetic oil.
However, although I could not find any reason to delay switching to synthetics immediately, I could find no reliable source that said it was clearly OK. So, discretion being the better part of valor, I decided to wait until the second oil change...

Actually the BMW and Mercedes comes from the factory with "break-in oil". It is their own mixture of oil that allows the engine to proper break in and then the replace it with synthetic. It would be safe to say that putting sythetic oil in later rather than early would be the rule of thumb. I don't think not doing it for a few oil changes will really hurt the engine that much. I plan to do mine after the 3rd oil change.

I agree with MI2KSE..I found about a 50/50 split when I tried doing some research on when I should put it in...
I also could not find a 100% answer in either direction...I bought a 6 pack of Mobil 1 5W30 and was going to have the dealer put it in at my 1st change at 1K.
Maybe I'm paranoid or something but giving 20 something dollars in synth oil and trusting them to put it in the car rather than their trunk had me a little leery. So....I decided to hold off until my 2nd change at 4K and have a local mechanic who my folks always go to do it for me.
Plus my dealer only charged me 11 bucks for the 1st change and loaded her up with good ole Havoline

Synthetics may be good, but personally, I have never had problems with regular oil. Before the wreck my 89 Maxima had 228K showing on the odo (speedo cable broke for a year, so I put it closer to 250K miles) and the car NEVER had any engine problems. Always purred like a kitten, and growled like a tiger when floored. The oil was changed every 3K to 4500 miles. She never blew any smoke and never left me stranded. What a perfect car she was

Well I don't know if
synths made a diff in my co-worker's 2K Max but he changed over to Mobil One at 1K and compared to my Max, his feels peppier and seems to "growl" a bit more when you give it the gas.
Is any of this related to the synths? Who knows but his max sure does run mean and strong....our Max's are just about identical...base SE's automatics except he had an after market sunroof installed.

I think everyone....
including the mags will agree, the max is actually stronger after 3000-4000 miles. This has been some of the reason for the discrepency in 0-60 times in the mags. Also, there were alot of quirks with starting and idle that mostly cleared up with mileage. Since 6000, it seems to have settled in.
I cant imagine syns 'hurting' your engine, but it will take longer to break-in the engine completely. I'm not sure if it would change the characteristics of the engine in the long term. My dealer wont do syn changes til you have 9000 miles (or third change).

5,000miles
I did my first oil chage at 5,000miles and then again at 11,000miles. From what I hear, it is not necessary to do it at 1,000miles. It takes time for all the seals and stuff to settle and its not good to change oil at that time. Oh well, follow your own rules.
