cheap exhaust thoughts

Alll

I just cant afford a whole catback exhaust, so I was thinking about simply swapping out the muffler and adding a nice set of tips. I've heard the catback doesn't add too much HP anyway, and what I really want is some additional sound and a change in external appearance from some nice tips.

So, while not optimal, this would work for the time being. So is this is what I'm leaning towards, what muffler will give me a nice deep note while not being overbearing? I've seen folks write about the magnaflow muffler, is that the best? Any audio clips? Which mangaflow model for a 2k max?

Any other experiences with other muffler brands?

thanks,

das

I had an OBX cat back exhaust and since changed the muffler from the GReddy style OBX which hung too low and dragged on my driveway entrance, Great low tone , but too big. cut off and welded on a Powertech pt1012 muffler louder but looked better and better clearance. Canged again because of the droaning noise at 2300 rpm. Finally went to a Megan dual canister with silencers. Quitest with silencers in.

i put a universal 3 inch slant itp muffler on and had the b-pipe removed, it souds great, like a car in fast and furius. i love it and total it only costs about 150 dollars. 50-100 for muffler, 25 instalation for welding and mounting, and about 25 to have the b-pipe replaced with just a straight piece of exhaust pipe. it is the easiest and cheapest way to get that sweet racing sound. since then i bought a greddy though and i love it too.

a couple of things you might want to consider before doing this. removing the b-pipe (the resonator: basically another muffler that is right behind the cat), will decrease gas mileage because of the loss of back preasure. also the sound does get anoying sometimes when you are trying to talk in your car or just want some quiet time, so you might want to consider getting one with a silencer.

there have been some dynos that show around 7-8 whp or so for catbacks, so thats significant for a bolt on. As for sound, I had a muffler welded on shortly after I got my car. Sounds pretty good (have yet to know what it really sounds like outside the car - I always hear it inside) But when my gf took my car the other day, I noticed some 350Z tones coming. I was supposed to have a flowmaster, but the shop didnt put that one on. I guess its just a generic dual chamber straight thru muffler. Pics are on the homepage. I also have sound clips if anyone wants. Just drop a PM

thanks all! great info.

based on your link Nathan (great page w/muffler clips), I think I like the sound of the powertech and Greddy SP muffler the best. are those the stock tips on each muffler listed on your page?

where can I get these, and any idea how much they cost?

where is the info on an aftermarket bpipe?

I bought mine from www.ketronsales.com. That muffler is the PT1011. It comes with the tips in the pics.

If interested I am selling the Megan dual canister muffler since it won't fit the stillen rear kit opening. The muffler already has hangers welded on $50 give me email and I can send photo. Don't know how to put link on post.
