2k2 sucks in snow

I have 2K2 SE and today it snowed alot in NYC. I have the stock Potenza's and it sucks so bad. There is a slight hill about 20% incline and my car could not make it up. The traction control kicked in and that is it, just cuts off the engine because of no traction. even at a slight incline, my car would slide sideways just going 2 mph. Time to get new tires. My car has 25K miles and still have some tread left on it. Putting it in first gear (Auto) helps a little.

Its not your 2k2 that sucks in the snow, its those Sh!tenza tires that blow.

Man get some winter rubber. The stock Pot's will kill ya in the snow. And with 25k they are going to be very bad in the rain next spring.

As much as I hate the potenzas, i'm having no probs in the snow w/them - cannot fly around but no traction issues- the 6MT helps- start on 2nd-
rain is another issue

Man, I had just posted the same thread related to this.. Yeah, tonight I had learned the hard way. I wasn't aware of this TCS feature in my 2KSE. Each time I climb a small incline, the wheels would slip and the engine would cut the power off to the wheels. I had to park and leave my car about 10 miles from my house! After posting on the Org., I later went and picked up my car, turn the TCS off, and drove her home with no problems!! This Org. is great! Thanks fellow members!!

My Dad has some very worn Kumho 712's on his 2000 SE 5spd and we have not had a problem with traction in the snow. They do a decent job, would be alittle better if they werent so damn low (needs new tires badly).

We also have a 98 Durango, and have only used 4wd once in the snow. We were at our Whistler house and there was 3.5feet of snow on the driveway, needless to say we made it into the garage, but only made it 3/4 of the way to the door when the rear wheels iced the surface and we needed 4wd. Yeah, we could have parked it in the street or cleared out the driveway, but wheres the fun in that.

Only use 4wd when you need it, otherwise you might actually have less control... and I'm talking true 4wd, none of this computer crap.

If snow happens where you live, you need 4 snow tires on your car. It's that simple. A couple years back Car and Driver did a winter comparitive test of RWD, FWD and AWD cars equipped with both all season and snow tires. The FWD with snows performed as well as the AWD with all seasons. That said, a FWD car with good quality all seasons can get by in winter. But your cr@ptenzas are anything BUT a good all season tire. They are almost as bad in the wet as they are in the snow. On anything but dry roads they are freakin' dangerous, in my opinion.

I've got 4 Pirelli Winter 210s on my Max. Bring on the snow. These things are great!

Cheers,

Jaeger

I managed the tail end of witer last year (got the car if feb) with the potenzas. Even new they still sucked in the snow. Picked up some Toyu Garit HT's for this winter. Looks like I'll get to try them this weekend with a possible 18-24" coming!

Its the tires, not the car. The "pretenzas" suck in snow but probably more in rain. Glad they are gone from my car.

Yeah, last year mine did a lot of slippin' and slidin', even when I was being careful, manually starting in 2nd, etc. This year, while not entirely necessary, I got some Blizzaks, and while kinda spendy, this car rocks in the snow. It's like there's spikes on the wheels, snow, ice, hills, no problems (well, except for the other guy!) If you want some winter confidence and have some money to burn, Blizzaks rule.

Same here.. I still have my Potenzas on. I was driving up a slope of about 10 degrees. I then started slipping and sliding. It was actually embarassing because there were neighbors around and they couldn't beleive that I was having problems, and were actually laughing. I have got to get rid of these tires when the snow stops!

Those damned Bridgestones are a joke. I'm surprised I didn't get myself killed the last two winters!!!

Try a set of Pirelli PZero Nero M&S tires. TireRack has them for $127 each for 235/45-17. Don't even sweat the tire size difference. They fit fine on the stock rims. Plus I tested the odometer with my Uniden GSP radar detector, and the odometer speed matched the LED readout perfectly at 70mph.

I used to have winter and summer tires on their own set of rims, but I got seriously tired of swapping them twice every year. These are a good balance of dry/wet/snow traction. I know there are probably better tires for the snow, but compared to the Craptenza's, these are worth their weight in gold!!!

In snow, I just put extra silicone tire dressing on the tread itself and keep her floored in 1st.
I also put a couple a 50lb bags of sand in the trunk, you know, over the drive wheels.

I have an 03 GLE with 17 in OEM all seasons. Do the 02/03 SE have 17 in OEM tires too? How much are the Blizzaks or Pirelli Winter 210 for a set of four with average rims?

The SE has 225/50-17 Potenzas versus the Turanzas (i think) on the GLE but, check www.tirerack.com for winter tire packages.

Though I live in NJ i've never driven my Max in the snow. Fortunately, I commute by train everyday so my Max will probably not see snow very often. (4 years to go and I'll be in Florida permanently. )

Peace

Parking the Max for the winter and bought a 1996 Beretta for a daily driver. It's not worth breaking something else on my Max.

I just replaced my stock Toyos at 30,000 miles on my I30 with the Kumhos HP4 716s for only $65/tire (Tire Rack). They are all season and have been great in the snow and rain. Had a great time testing them out this weekend.

I have those on my Quest and I agree. They are great all seasons for the snow.

Just buy some blizzaks or mich arctic alpins on a second set of rims for winter only and swap them back and forth. Plus your summer sneakers will last alittle longer.
