Catalytic converter replacement = time for exhaust mods? ..and P0420 code
Upon my second trip to the dealer for a P0420 problem code (computer updated on first visit according to the TSB for this code), the dealer says the cat converter is going bad ...as they determined from testing the O2 sensors. I have a 2000 SE manual with 85k miles (of course just over the 80k emissions warranty)
Question 1: Does this diagnosis sound correct, or should I go to a non-dealer shop?
Question 2: If the converter is bad, how much life do I have left before bad things start happening (other than failed smog tests)?
Question 3: The dealer quoted $800+ to replace the converter. Is now the time to look at having some performance exhaust parts put in? How much would some exhaust enhancement along with the converter at a performance shop run me?

get a straight pipe!! 45 shipped to your door from warpspeed!
or any aftermarket cat is like 95 shipped to your door - contact 97gles
and all you gotta do is pop off 4 bolts and replace it. nissan is full of it!
y-pipe runs you about $180-299 pending who you buy from.
http://www.warpspeedperformance.com/nissan.htm
http://www.budgetexhaust.com/
those are 2 companies who sell y-pipes cats n exhaust.
or you can try greddy also.

hm, that doesn't make any sense. Well at least you can go aftermarket now since it'd be cheaper than having the dealer rip you off.
that code seems to pop up usually around 30k-60k 2k-2k1 maximas.... weird
