HUGE Wheel Spin/Stock Tires Suck??

Hey guys, I jus gotta 2003 SE last month, automatic. It has Bridgestone Potenza's on it, good treadwear, but when I floor the car it SPINS all the way thru first gear, to like 6,000+RPM before it takes off...I mean it's ridiculous!!

Is it because these stock tires are that bad?? What can I do to fix this, I mean how can I race someone from a start, if it spins for 5 seconds all the way thru first gear? Anyone else have this prob too?

Wow, that's ingenious!! How come I didn't think of that?? WAIT, I did!! I posted because I'm asking if it's the STOCK tires that are causing the excessive spin or whether it's simply the amount torque the 2003 is putting down, and whether other people experience the same wheel spin thru first gear with aftermarket/better tires. Thanks for tryin tho

Settle down now, no need to roll your eyes at fellow .org members, lol.

To answer your question, the quality of the oem rubber is to blame. The torque is always nice, but with the right rubber, your car will plant and away you will go. In fact, when you ditch the imPotenzas, and get new rubber, you will laugh at how poor of a job the oem's did.

With my old imPotenzas, the best 60' I could get was 2.4xx, with an ocassional 2.3xx, with the new HTR+ (I suggest you try these) I have gotten 1 2.3xx, two 2.1xx, and the rest 2.2xx's. My times went from 15.0-15.4 to 14.7-14.9.

Variety is a beautiful thing.

haha, i'd never roll unless it was deserved lol...the whole point of this site is to help each other without stupid remarks or looking down on other members, which u did...thanks, i appreciate it I had the HTR's on my 96 Maxima, LOVED them, but do they come in 225/50/17 tho? I only saw them in 225/45/17...

No prob bro.

Yeah, only size available is 45/17, s u c k s huh ? Obviously, manufacturer will tell you to adhere to the oem tire size, so tire load rating isn't an issue...But, there isn't much variety in the stock size, whereas the 45/17 is more widely available, prices are more competitive.

To a discerning eye, the 50 and 45 series tire mounted on oem wheels can be told apart, and the 45 series tire will leave an even bigger wheel/fender gap...I plan on dropping my Max, since it sits a tad too high for my tastes now, but oh well...I can come off the light with confidence now.

FWIW, If I had to do it again, I would switch the HTR+ for the imPotenzas in a second.

im running toyo proxes t1/s... beautiful tire, good tread/wear pattern, and extreme performance... if you can afford it, i'd definately reccommend em... the stock potenzas are garbage...

Hahahaha.....

Anyways, your not going to find any tire in our size that will be able to handle WOT from a stop. You have to work into it or your going to roast the tires.

I'm a little different with Turenzas, but i've managed plenty of 2.2xx and 2.3xx 60' times at the strip. Also have an auto tho. But no, they're not a real sticky tire, and no dont drive them in the snow.

You're right that the stock tires are pretty bad (actually, in the rain 'F***ING DANGEROUS' would be more accurate )

But even with a change to Pilots, Kumhos, or any other tire, they're still not going to plant if you floor it from a stop. 260 ft / lbs of torque is going to spin any "normal" size tires.

The best way to get max acceleration from a stop is to power brake at about 1,200 rpms, then control the gas from the start. Stomping on it will spin the tires; taking a second or two to reach the floor will minimize spin.
