02 Fuel Filter

Can anybody tell me where the fuel filter is on a 02 SE ??? I understand it may be in the gas tank- if so, how do you access it and to anyone who has changed theirs, how much of a pain is it ??
thanks-

You access it by removing the back seat. The filter isn't a pain to change, but does take time.

According to Nissan, it doesn't have to be changed on a regular basis because of it's location. It's inside the gas tank.

That would refer to it being "maintenance free". Nothing on cars is maintenance free.

Wait can the fuel filter even be changed by us?

Steve said that you have to remove the back seat, another person says its in the fuel tank. Why would u remove the back seat to get to the fuel filter in the gas tank?

When you remove the back seat you'll see an access plate that leads to the fuel tank/fuel filter

You only need to remove the rear seat bottom, not the entire seat. It takes a minute or two to remove and you don't need any tools besides your hands.

Any special tools required for fuel filter replacement, besides the typical socket/ratchet set and screwdrivers?
(i.e. do you need a special punch tool to put the new seal on after the fuel pump's reinstalled?)

A pair (or two) of thin long nosed "needle nosed" pliers might be handy. Be careful once you have the fuel assembly out, you have to disassemble it to get the fuel filter out. Make sure to be careful not to break the quick disconnects on the sender assembly as one member found out.

Go slow, be patient...its not hard. Hit me up here if you need more help. I know this inside and out.

Forget that the manual says. It's a filter like any other filter (that gets dirty, clogged, worn out) and it needs to be changed periodically. Sounds like a PITA to change ours but should be done.
