Goddam West Virginia.....put that **** on their roads. Backwards-*** state....I got a 5-hun deductible on the insurance, so it probably wouldn't be worth it to file a claim and would just screw me in the long run....pretty sure the rockers are galvanized steel, which could explain why it chipped easily but is not rusting....

Anyone have any suggestions about rubbing compounds/colored wax that might minimize the problem? I'm not too worried about the look of it...just looks like it's dirty....just want to make sure no rust. I'm also waiting to see if I get any response from the Wva. DOT......Need to find out what that stuff is so I can sue the hell out of them.

Yeah, my car has the same problem. It looks pretty much like the pic you posted here.

that is horrible. i've never seen anything like it but now i am scared to drive mine.

i would try a tar and bug remover. some of it seems stuck to the paint actually, since if you look at the rear rocker, behind the rear door, the clear plastic wrap is also covered with the salty deposits. if it was only the paint, clear wrap shouldn't be 'dirty' since there is no paint on it.

edit: for the rust, i would grab a spray can of clear enamel/coat and give it a pass. since it's still winter time it will rust. not sure on which one would work best for your color but home improvement stores have a good choice of clear coats to choose from.

Besides, previous owner left some paperwork in the seat-back pocket. Address was in Great Falls, va. If you're not familiar with Great Falls, the cheapest houses there go for 750,000 bucks...it's where all the DC bigwigs, CEOs, pro athletes, etc. live....not the kind of person who would probably do something sneaky like that, IMHO.

Guess I'll see what the dealer says.
Funny that DC bigwigs, pro athletes drove a maxima

Well they're not ALL athletes and bigwigs...also alot of upper-middle class families and stuff....

I bought my previous car ('92 Accord EX Coupe) from a 30-somethings couple that lived out there (not thru dealer; directly) about 7 years ago....They had 2 small kids, and also had a Lexus and a Grand Cherokee...when I inquired as to why a 5-year old car had only 30,000 miles on it, they told me that they didn't drive it much, it was just the "grocery getter"...that they drove the Lexus and the G.C. to work/travel.

Maybe the Max was also a "grocery getter" I shudder at the thought!

Hey EvilRoadsVictim - definitely not salt or dirt on it...the pic I took was AFTER washing the car and scrubbing that area with bug/tar remover and other solvents....defintely chips.

00MaxSE - sorry to hear yours is the same as mine, although I'm secretly a little happy to hear I am not the only poor bastard this happened to. Does that make me a bad person? Stupid Nissan paint.

Anyhow, I'm going to toy with some solvents, compounds/waxes tomorrow and see if anything makes it better...will post any good results....Yeah 63 degrees today in D.C. in January...supposed to be 30 by Wednesday so I gotta do it tomorrow.

My hood looks f-ing ridiculous after 4 years.

Know what's funny? Does anyone have the original marketing brochure for your Max's? In 2000, the brochure had a 2-page spread on how Nissan shot diamonds out of an air gun at the paint to test it for chip-resistance. This, by far, is the crappiest paint I have ever seen on a car. I hope those engineers lost their jobs! I 100% love everything about this car, but I think I could find paint at Walmart that would hold up better.
I think dodge has the crappiest paint theres just peels off after a few years.
