richspidizzy....is selling aftermarket HID actually illegal (worldwide - since ebay is international)?

Obviously selling stolen ones is, but is selling "non-stolen" ones illegal too?

Why not pass a law that empowers the police to give tickets to cars with non-OEM HIDs. The ticket can be voided if the car owner produces a bona fide copy of a sales receipt from an authorized dealer.

That would require cops to know each and every car that comes with factory HIDs......I mean some guys with 2k2-3 maxes have 2k-1 tails, so cops might think THEY have aftermarket HIDs....

The VIN can show the make, model and year of the car. That info can be fed into a hand held computer which can readily identify whether a particular car comes with OEM HIDs.

good point....and back to the original topic, couldn't that same "hand held computer" just scan a vin on the headlights to make sure they weren't reported stolen....

All aftermarket HID kit are illegal to sell or own within the united states. This is because they are not DOT compliant. For more info see these two posts on hidforum.com:

Even though ebay is international, they may prohibit the sale of HID components on their site if they know the components are illegal within the US (They may at least prohibit buying/selling within US). Im am still working on this with ebay and will kep everyone updated.

There IS a law and police ARE empowered to give tickets for aftermarket HID kits. It's the same law that allows them to give tickets for slick tires, etc. They are not DOT compliant.
It's a matter of the police knowing/enforcing the law. When was the last time you saw someone get a ticket for jayalking? A law is only as effective as it's enforcement.

In Florida, stealing someone's fishing gear IS a big deal! Ask any Florida boys on here. I suspect him even more now.

No more taking my car to the mall. I have not heard of any HID thefts in Jacksonville.

Only problem is...a 2k2-3 HID sold on ebay is not, technically, aftermarket...it's a DOT-approved HID light....all the seller has to do is "assume" it will be put onto a 2k2-3 Maxima, where it is "standard" vice "aftermarket".....

Now on the other hand, a non-Nissan OEM HID made by a different "aftermarket" company would be illegal...

Ok, that's my last word on this...I don't even HAVE HIDs....just trying to contribute to the discussion....

Look a little further Sherlock Holmes and you will see that not only does he sell fishing gear on eBay but he also buys it. Perhaps a hobby.

I still think you guys are jumping to conclusions and hassling the wrong guy.

Yeah, headlights, side mirrors, hood ornaments; everything that's easy to rip off a parked car.
