Fuel filter is in the gas tank. Long story short you have to pull back seat, and access panel to get at assembly to replace. Not hard, but will take you about 45 mins to 1.5 hours. I have done it.

Auto tranny or Manual?

for tranny fluid, use anything comptaible to mercon/dexon 3. nissan will suggest using their brand, Dmatic or something close to that. i use mobil 1 atf and its compatible.

fredflypogger: Check the thread posted above. I authored that thread. Please take note that the pics of the inside of the fuel filter housing will look a little different, as you will have 2 hoses instead of just 1... mine was like that because I ****ed it up and had to rig it to make it work until I get new parts (which, incidentally, I got today!)

Those pics will guide you, though, especially the part about removing the fuel pump housing.

If you want my opinion, I'd take it to the dealer to have all this work done. It's not worth having your car out of commission (or rigging your fuel pump assembly) if you make a mistake and break something. Not worth it at ALL.

How often should the fuel filter be changed if at all?

After 50K miles, my 2K saw a significant difference. I'm planning for every 50K miles. Nissan claims this is a "non-maintenance item".

Fuel filter + new O-ring runs around $22 shipped from DAVEB at South Point Nissan.
I think the fuel filter itself is around $14, O-ring is $5. The O-ring should be replaced every time... it's an O-ring which seals between the fuel pump housing and the fuel tank at the top.
