You could get some foreign particles in your engine if you were running without an air-filter. An organic particle like dirt wouldn't do much harm, it would get burned up in the combustion chamber. Something larger like a pebble/rock that were to get into the combustion chamber, and you might be in bigger trouble.

Agreed. Also, a few who have swapped out their intakes have destroyed their engines by allowing small peices of metal into their intakes. On the oil end, how exactly would you get foreign particles in your oil? I mean, it comes straight out of the bottle into your engine. Unless your funnel was filthy...

Even then, the oil filter should suspend the particles, so long as they don't damage the oil pump first... and some of those should get rejected by the oil pickup strainer, eventually floating to the bottom of the oil pan

If you allow dirt in sufficient quantities to enter the engine, it will wear the cylinder walls and piston rings like sandpaper would. Dirt is abrasive. That's why the air filter is the most important filter on your engine. For example, if you were to drive your car on dusty roads for a few hours w/o an air filter, your engine would be toast by the time you finished driving.

The key is to prevent the dirt from entering in the first place. Once it gets into the cylinders, it's too late to do anything about that dirt. Just ensure that you have a properly fitted air filter assembly at all times. Engine flush is mainly for engine deposits like varnish and sludge. I don't see any way it could remove dirt from the cylinders.
