High output alternator?

I've installed the UR UDP on my 2000 Maxima SE (w/82k miles) and have found that when at idle (~6k rpm), my headlights go dim as well as the dash lights. It gets worse when I turn on a fan or rear defogger. I assume its the old alternator in combination with the underdrive. Should I just replace with a new/reman alternator or install a high output alternator (if there is one). Or am I SOL. Thanks in advance.

Do NOT install a reman or Autoparts store alternator. Too many people have had problems.

Get a NISSAN 4th gen. alternator for an extra 10amps and *SUPPOSEDLY*(haven't verified myself) direct fit.

Alternator

Thanks Ice,
I'm gonna try it and find out. If it doesn't work, all I'll lose is an afternoon and few bucks.

Please let me know what happens. Thanks.

BTW, have you investigated using a multimeter or using an Autozone tester that your alternator really can't "put-out"?

alternator

I installed a new Optima Red top and I used a mulitimeter on the posts to see how well the alternator was recharging the battery. I came out with low numbers. I figured it was the UDP and the alternator. Once I get the 4th gen alt in I'll let you know. Thanks for your help.

Could also be poor grounding. Maybe worth checking into before putting in a new alternator.

I've had no problems with lower power after installing my UR UDP. I think in all cars the lights are dimmer when idling, that goes for my old car, my parents cars, the Silverado, everything. Soon as ya tap the gas they brighten up (just a little, nothing too substantial)

Let me know about that 4th gen. alternator install. I just installed my UDP and haven't seen any difference electrical wise. I do however have a pretty big stereo.I'm thinking of swapping alt. and getting a yellow or blue top. Wish it were possible to get an alternator with a higher output more than +10 amps.
