Need advice
I have my 5spd SE sitting in the carport for about a week 'cause I am out of town. So, this morning I got it started to go to work and suddenly I heard a loud bang from the engine.. I was so shock.. what the %$#* is that. so I get out from the car and start looking around open up my bonnet and everything seems to be normal, although I smell the exhaust rather rich in fuel, and again this is normal in the morning. So, I have no idea what is going on?

is this a common symptom for almost 30k car with reputable badge like nissan?

if you have any suggestion or similar issue please let me know.

Thank's

Sounds like it backfired.... Mine never did that, and I certainly would not expect it from a new $30k Nissan...

I Hope it's not an indication of some grander problem...

Thanks for the info
However, I don't believe that will be the backfire.
the car has barely 7k miles on it and drive great this afternoon. and what do you mean by "grander" I need more explanation. I do believe that someone in this group has post similar problem last year but I couldn't recall it using search. So if anybody had any idea please reply

Thank you
Erwin

Sorry, but I guess I just assumed that your car backfired... (not many ways in which a car can make a loud BANG)...

You see, when you live in a large city with lots of cars around, occasionally you'll be walking down the street, and someone will try to fire up an old domestic car... BOOM... Backfire!!!!

Anyway, I guess that I don't have advice... I do remember somebody posting about a car failing to start in the morning, and I posted once about a rough start in the morning (which i traced back to shell premium gasoline.. .as soon as I switched to another brand, it went away)... I don't remember any posts about loud bangs however...

Call the service dept at your Nissan dealership, maybe they can help... It can't hurt to have it checked out if your car is still under warrenty...

-Tom

PS.. by a grander problem, I just meant a "bigger problem"... I think it's pretty safe to assume that Nissan didn't design the car to emit loud "bangs", within spec....

if i remember correctly, i think that they said to run your finger around the tailpipe and see if there is a black residue there, and if there is then there is a problem.

There is no black spot indication in the exhaust either and I did recalled from this morning, it more like howling and grinding sounds than just loud bang for a very short moment. If I take the car to the dealer, I'll bet that the dealer will finding a hard times to replicate my problem.

any other suggestion?

Could be some fuel residue that settled in one of the cylinders during the time you were away that may have preignited, although, I don't know anything that would cause that. What kind of gas are you using..reg or premium?? Has it run normally since?? Any other symtoms?

I've been using the premium unleaded with 93 octane from the local albertson gas station and this is the first time it happens. Get my oil change to syntetic (2nd oil change from new) about a month ago at Trophy Nissan in Mesquite, TX for 7500 miles service. I drove it during lunch time and drive great like normal. and the typical fuel cut problem for a stick shift is still there as we had discuss it with other member in this forum. Other than that I had no idea.. I did get the drop in KN filter.

So any idea?

thanks

I have a K&N drop in and no problems. Here is another idea..You could of had a blockage in you exhaust system. This may sound bizarre and may be an outside shot, but a mouse could have crawled up your tail pipe and lodged itself just aft of your muffler...kind of like the "banna up the tailpipe" scene in Beverly Hills cop

sounds like a tranny drop

thats a third to first tranny drop. or second drop. the first time I heard that, I thought the engine was going be on the ground or dragging being the car by the harness. Scary.. now think, did you slow down then give some gas on a slight incline (up or down). cuz ummm that'll make a big bang sometimes. will shutter the whole car.

It's your timing chain. There's actually a Canadian TSB out on it. It only happens after a cold soak. And it's really scary. It sounds for just a moment like your engine is tearing itself apart.

It happened to me once after a cold soak, so don't feel alone. My recommendation? Have someone start your car every couple of days. If you do, you'll never hear that sound again.

Re: And the answer is . . .

Where did you find out about the Canadian TSB? I live in Canada by I am not able to find any Canadian versions' TSB from Nissan.

I experienced something similar before after I didn't start my car for 2 weeks. When I start the car, the engine ran really loud and the whole car was shaking then the rpm slowly drops to 0. I didn't hear any particular bang or anything and after I start it again the car ran fine. I guess our maximas would "complain" if it's unattended for a long period of time.

I located the info on the Maxima.org forum. But don't ask me what thread it was in. I remember seeing it a few months ago.

I remember once hearing a pretty loud squeel one time. The kind of squeel the suzuki swift accross the street from me makes (scary,huh.). It did it 4 months ago and never again.

it only happens once to my car, that tiome the weather was preety mild, but the car been sitting in the lot for a week without anyone starting in or warm it up.

I assume the sound was coming from the timing chain without any lubrication on it. Since all the oil is drain out to the pan.
This is the least thing I expect from a car such as maxima.
