How to remove steering wheel w/o airbag going off?

I'd search the threads but......

I'm looking at replacing my unheated wheel with a heated one and would like to do it w/o having the airbag blow up in my face. Has anyone done this and if so, can you describe the procedure.

In my 97' there is a fuse labeled "air bag", so I'm thinking if you remove that, it'll prevent the air bag from going off, but there may be some sort of backup that I'm unaware of.

It's best to follow the instructions in the Nissan service manual. There are some important steps involved regarding the spiral cable for the airbag module.

Can someone explain this to me too? I'm so tired of having the airbags blow up in my face when I try to steal 'em...

In order to remove the airbag, there are some parts that are designed as "non-removable" parts that you have to break to remove it properly. If you finally do go the route of removal, pick up an ESM long before you start the install. I won't describe it because it's too long of a process, plus the whole "stealing air bags" deal that could circulate.

One thing I can tell you is that you need to remove the negative battery cable and wait a minimum of 10 minutes before starting the process. This is written everywhere in the ESM for any airbag procedure.

Stealing the wheel, I honestly hadn't thought of that. I guess if I'm stealing something on a Max it's going to be HID lights first.

I found a wheel at a local salvage yard, but upon seeing the service manual on this, I'm thinking I'll let my repair guy tackle this for me.

Did the salvaged Max have heated mirrors too?
