02 w/NAV: Is a new HU feasible?

So I now have an 02 w/Nav... can I take out the tape deck underneath the navi and stick in an Alpine without many problems?

three options that i'm looking at:

- leave the 'blose' tape deck and add an amp and replace speakers.

- add an Alpine HU that also plays dvd and hook it up to the navi screen.

- add an Alpine HU that has a flip out screen and plays dvds.

are any of these feasible?

Kloogy has asked this question on several occasions to no avail.

No one who has anted up for factory nav has been "man" enough to try.....

basically, general consensus was to shell out funds for an HU and try to remove stock tape deck from location and see if new HU will plug in place and work with the factory screen

OT but consensus also was that since factory nav was cd based instead of the better dvd based units now available, it sux anyway but hey....

if either of you was in NY, I got an old HU i'd be willing to let someone test on, but to the best of my knowledge, no NY orger exists with factory nav

so no answers yet? good to know its been posed. we'll see if my installer gives me go ahead on this.

OT- yes, dvd is better, but really how much? enough to say it sucks? u may be correct, but how do you know. so if cd-nav sux ,then non-nav is what? personally, nav is unimportant to me- just got a great deal and happened to hav it.

Nice system-

I'm wondering howmany things can go wrong once i remove the tape deck. since the radio turns off while the navi gives directions, it seems like there may be more communication b/w the deck and nav than i think. i'll keep you posted if i try something.

Why not just view movies through the Nav screen?

The Nav plays CDs... and nobody has successfully tapped into the video source of the screen with an external DVD player yet...

It would have been too easy for Nissan to throw the Infiniti DVD based Navi in the Maximas

Actually yes it has been sucessfully done many times over. The Infiniti DVD based unit still will not play movies through your screen. An addon unit would still be required.

I haven't seen it done with the Maximas? Is that a kit from nav-tv.com? I'd like to play DVDs in my car, but I thought there was the whole problem still with the video source/audio source?

hmm.. maybe there is a light at the end of my dark tunnel of questions...

Interesting... I'd like to get that kit, or something compatible for my nav sys.

You wouldn't happen to know where I can get it, or it can be done, would you?

Don, the factory Nav for the 02-03 maxima is CD based, not DVD so watching movies thru the screen might be tuff

The way he was describing it was that it's like a bridge that works behind the navi. You plug the navi into the unit, and then there are inputs for the dvd, camera, whatever you want to hook up. Then flip a switch and it uses the video source, and the audio system the navigation would use. So it sounded like it isn't really using the CD system of the navigation, just the screen..
