K&N Filter on 2k2 2k3?
K&N Filter on 2k2 2k3?
I want ro put the just the K&N cone filter on my 2k2 max, and was wondering if its not a good idea. I noticed some people are having issues with their MAF's and was wondering if the K&N may cause this. Any 2k2 or 2k3'ers please give feedback!
I've also heard of people having MAF issues with High flow intakes. Also you may experience a loss of power. I tried taking off my Stock air scoop and adding a K&N stock replacement which basically made it a Warm air intake and I noticed less throttle response(huge lag time) and it seemed to lag on the lower end, even though it had alot less restriction in air flow. I modded the stock intake(ooglie CAI) and put it back on and it seems to be better than stock now(no dyno though). Throttle response is deffinately better than stock.
If you read some of the other posts(or search around maxima.org using the Yahoo.com advanced search), it seems that the expensive Cold air intakes gain good HP in the upper end, but lose the lower end torque. The Warm air intakes seem to give better gains overall, but each one has it's particular downfalls. Quite a few have made the ooglie CAI out of their stock air intakes and saw gains similar to the Berk intakes.
In my experience the modded stock box is the way to go. It is better than stock, costs include the K&n filter and a $3.00 hose. After my experience, I would not go with a intake that draws warm air, so it is either stock or a CAI, but this is My opinion.

There is much debate on the subject of intakes i.e. which one is best. As suggested, browse the threads in this forum...you'll discover a lot of info, then make the choice that seems best for you. Most types only increase HP by a small margin, but the sound is great!
DON'T DO IT!!!!
I did it in a 2000 SE 5 Speed. The MAF went out and so did one of the O2 sensors. The MAF's work off some back pressure and the K&N screws it up!!!
I am thinking of going back to K&N for my $750.00!!!
Seriously, do not do this.

The main problem is the crally MAF's in the VQ...I am sorry..it is the only problem.
Don't blame K&N....It's Nissan that deserves the BLAME

There is no such thing as backpressure in the intake or exhaust of our Maximas...(unless you're boosted, and when you let off the gas the TB plate slams shut, then you can have slight backpressure).
O2 sensor probably didn't go bad due to the intake, either. Most likely, it was just it's time to go. They do tend to wear out every 50-60K miles (some sooner, some later).
