Would you have bought a 2000 or 2001 Maxima? Why or why not? Is quality a big concern. Are there any people with higher mileage cars. This will really help me out with deciding on getting a 2001. Thanks.

i have almost 37,000 miles on my car and i've had my car for about 14 months. well, there are no problems what so ever from the car. only problems would be sometimes all the aftermarket parts i've added makes noise..

It really doesn't matter to me because both years have the same problems. 5 spd owners seem to have less problems though...

Well, I am pretty happy with it, but --->

The build quality of the car is just not there...
I mean, paint chips, RATTLES!!!. Plus I had problems like damaged strut. Dealer fixed the problem, but I still hear some noises from the front.
Plus when I got the car, the dealer sold me the car that was damaged on the delivery, because I noticed some oversprays of paint in some places.. Nothing major, but still sucks to get a brand new car and have it be repainted in some places before you even drove it.

I would say... Engine is great, I love 5-speed too. Suspension can be made better with after market stuff...
Build Quality is another story though, and that is where I regret buying this car..

Hope this helps.

Laterz.

If I had it to do over... I woulda stuck with the max.. but I would've gotten a fully loaded grey lustre 5spd. No more automagic for me. Perhaps the AE for the LSD.

Well I can't comment on the 2000 as I own a 2001, and Kev is right. From all the posts I have read over the past few months, the problems that people have with their maxes are the same whether it's a 00 or 01. Nissan really didn't fix S#*t. Maybe the newer autos have better trannys but who knows. They only real difference I see between the two model years are minor things like steering wheel stereo controls in 01. Still love my car though.

Regardless of the joys of the LSD, the audio controls, the extra 5 hp, the 2000 gave me one benefit that there is no way the 2000 could have gotten me... Smiles faster! I am real glad I didn't wait for a 2001, which at the time was at least 1 month and there was no guarantee as to colour. (I refused to accept black, no flames please :-) ).

If stock was available for both at the time I bought, I would have gotten the 2001, the bells and whistles will be worth more in 4 years.

I have to say that I am impressed with the recent 5 months with my 2001 AE edition. (wifes actually) I had the bug to modify it slightly, which I lost after selling my Ram Air Trans Am. (Had three other cars since) The build quality is nice and quiet, and the leather is much more real looking than GM cars. Transmission seems like it was more of an old conventional type than a modern electronic control model. The pricing is high for a car of its size, but I guess thats why their good discounts available and many on the lot to choose from. Biggest gripe is the damn paint on the front and the fact that any small rock makes a big chip. Even the nose mask fails to protect properly.

2000-2001

I have no regrets buying my 2K in May last year-as far as I am concerned, no change in GLE from 2000 to 2001 except for audio controls on steering wheel-big deal...

My Max is a joy to drive...

If I knew about the AE when I bought my car, I would have waited for a Grey Lustre, Sterling Mist, Super Black, Majestic Blue, or Icelandic Pearl Maxxed out with every available option on a manual. I REALLY regret not buying a stick.

Not to say the Auto stinks, It just doesn't feel like a "sports" sedan like it's claimed to be.

I'm not sure....I didn't look at enough cars before I bough my Max.

I really, really love the power of the car but it's the other thinks such as the crap service Nissan provides, rattles and other stuff that cheese me a bit.

Now if I could trade my auto in for a stick ...well than things might be a little bit dandier.

Gas pedal vibration also bugs me quite a bit also...are all Max's like this?

me?

if I could reset the whole experience and put that wad of cash back in my pocket... I'm march over to the Infinity lot and get the real maxima, the I30. you know, the one that is technically identical but has SERVICE!

with 2001's out, I would see what I could do on a new 2000 i30t.

jnm, many of us have the pedal vibe, it comes from the exhuast.

if i could go back i woulda waited for the s2k. (the acura 3.2 cl type-s wasn't out at the time, or else i woulda got that)

but u say 2k1 or 2k? i say get 2k1. 2k1 is slightly more refined and an lsd tranny is also an option.

My very same Max. It only has bothered me with 2 problems. The rotors and the TCM. Pretty damn good compared to 22 problems on my last car.

if they had the awd poorman's a4 i wulda considered that back then too.. i almost got a blue jetta cuz i didn't want my parents paying for my car.. the only reason why i dind't end up with a jetta is cuz they just didin't have the vr6 in the dark blue i wanted in the lot that day.. oh yeah and of course it woulda been 5spd.

I was looking at a red (yeah, red) jetta one day. Could use a little more room in the back, but then again no one rides in the max really.

2k1

I never buy the first model year of any car because of problems.
I think they fixed a bunch between Y2K and 2K1 based on some of the rants I have seen here.

Only 2 problems with the 2K1:
- missing fuel inlet cover (betcha nissan comes back and says it was deleted on purpose)
- auto tranny problem (fixed via new solenoid(i hope))

Angela and I are still happy we bought the majestic blue AE instead of the Acura 3.2TL. It looks a LOT better (we get compliments all the time).

6 months and no regrets (especially since the service manager has been taking care of any problems without fighting)
