Oil Consumption?

I've always been puzzled by the fact that when I do an oil change, I drain approximaty 3 quarts of oil, but put in 4.25 quarts. I really hope I'm not alone in this.

Do you bother to add oil? If so, how much have you been having to add & how frequently?

A 1.25 quarts seems high to me. I normally am down between 0.5 and 1.0 quart every 5K miles. How often do you change your oil? Its normal for a certain amount of oil to get past rings, etc. and get burned with your gas. Of course the issue is how much.

Also there was a posting awhile back where the guy recommended getting your used oil tested. He sure made a good case of how you could diagnose some problems from the used oil. Never tried it myself but you might look around.

Mine usually drains 4 quarts and i put in 4.25. I'd think 1.5 quarts of burned oil is quite high...

I just drain it, and put in 4 quarts, then run the car, stop it, check the dipstick, and fill more if needed.....
