Flashing...the ECU that is; for a new MAF?

I recently got the P0171 and P0174 - System running too lean bank 1 and 2 respectively on my 2000 Max SE. I called my Nissan service advisor and he mentioned that it's most likely the MAF and a ECU flash is required to update the ECU for the new MAF - I have also confirmed this from other postings on the org...

I'm ordering a new MAF (22680-2Y001) from Dave B. and going to install it but I was wondering:

1) If a ECU flash is really needed? People have installed the new MAF any ECU problems?
2) I have had O2 sensors and ignition coils replaced recently at the dealers (yeah..it cost a lot) at which time they "flashed and reset the ECU" for these new updated parts. Does anyone know if a ECU flash will update the ECU for all parts or only specific ones? I.e. Sorta like updating Windows on your computer - you get all the latest drivers. I'm hoping that the last ECU flash also loaded the info for the new MAF!

FYI: All the other Canadians out there - some dealers in the GTA are charging $600 CAN for the new MAF (22680-2Y001)

Well mine is a 2k2 which blew a MAF, I just installed the 2k1 MAF from Dave B and transferred the temp sensor.

Car runs like never before, much smoother idle etc with no flash etc. Not easy getting around with a 2400 RPM limit for 2 weeks.

Rich1, I too had the same problem as you, I was getting the P0171 (bank 1 too lean) error. I found this out when I went for emissions testing and failed! DOH! I have yet to replace the O2 sensors and the ignition coils, fyi.

The ECU required no upgrading, but I was told to wait a few weeks to let the codes clear out of the ECU before I took it back for testing. Keep us updated.

I replaced my MAF with that exact same part # and the problem instantly went away.

My fuel economy went down after I replaced the MAF(22680-2Y001) at the dealership. Snap-on scanner revealed that my engine is running lean borderline to throwing a code. I ran scanned my car myself and it showed that second o2 sensor at idle sometimes goes to 0 and stays there for a while. So I am thinking, is it my o2 sensor or dealer "forgot" to flash the ecu after the MAF?

Btw, anyone have that MAF tsb? the old link in the stickies doesnt work.
