how can I take off the rear view mirror?

I have tried and tried, I do not want to break this thing! All I want to do is take of my rear view mirror... I do not see any screews, and all is there are the ball in sockets so the mirror can move. I am not sure if the mirror is stuck on the window with double sided tape, or some type of screew system. i need to take this off so i can take apart the mirrior itself. (i need to bring it inside with me.) i have the 2003 mirrior installed, the one with the compase. can anyone help me out on this one? thanks.

I thought all the auto-dims and compass mirrors had a screw on it to remove it from the windshield. I say this because I had bought one and installed it in my car. My stock mirror had no screw, so in order to remove it, I had used a hammer and screwdriver to tap/pry it up from the metal piece that is stuck on the windshield. The mirror is held onto the winshield by just sliding on/off this piece. I hope this helps any.

I used the tap and pry method as well. Yes, you will think you are going to shatter the windshield at any moment. You could take it to a glass installation shop (or body shop) and they could pop it off in a sec. In hindsight, that is what I should have done. It would have saved me 3 hours.
