ferrari sounding....

I have heard sound clips on the board from people with various aftermarket exhausts, and frankly I do not like any of them. I hate the loud drone and the "fart can" effect- no offense to anyone, its just not my style. I like the import sounds from the maserati's, ferrari's- who doesn't right?- but is it possible to get the sound close to theirs out of a max? If the pitch was higher I would absolutely LOVE the sound. Anyone have any suggestions on a quest for a higher pitched sound w/o the loud drone and fart sound in the low rpm band?

Get a stock Mitsu Eclipse GT exhaust. Pretty free-flowing and absolutely great sound.

How many maximas have you heard? 4 cylinder hondas get that fart can effect.

Sorry, a maxima is never going to sound like a ferrari or maserati. I think you need to get like a toy car or something. It aint happening.

i've heard alot of them, and while they don't sound as crappy as 4 cylinders, i grew up around muscle cars and just don't like the way our cars sound.

V6 muscle cars (man, that's a contradiction of terms) that sound decent usually have a true dual setup. So in theory if you could split each header off into a seperate pipe, run it towards the rear of the car. Install an X pipe, then run some type of dual muff on each pipe. You might get the sound.

Just be glad our cars don't sound like some of the tin can exhausts that are out there for little 4 bangers.

Furthermore. There is nothing that sounds anywhere near as sweet as a Camm'd out V8. I've heard one car that made me giggle as much. And it was a camm'd out Supra. The car sounded absolutely amazing at idle. And the fact that he put out 700hp on pump gas wasn't too shabby either.

You want a Ferrari sounding exhaust? Frankencar is the only way to go. Not kidding at all.

this may be the worst thread ever.....I mean, you have wade singing the praises of 6-cyl camaros, kirzan is enamored with Mitsu Eclipse exhaust (dos an eclipse catback even FIT on a maxima?) and now we have newbie Matt4Nissan with the "GIGGLES" ......What is this world coming to?

wade - if you don't like the way our cars sound, then why dont you get a muscle car...I mean, the maxima is a family/semi-luxury sedan (sorry guys, that's what it is)...so the entire exhaust setup is designed to BE QUIET......Changing 1 or 2 exhaust components is not going to magically make it sound like expensive euro sports cars or american muscle cars.......

For the record, in the last year Matt4Nissan the has owned, and built 2, SR20DET vehicles, and 1, 11 second Trans-Am WS.6. I am also a moderator on the SR20forum. So lets not go assuming.

Also have you ever heard a 10 second camm'd out Supra? The term giggle fits it rather well. Sorry I get goosebumps when I'm around mechanical pieces of art. YMMV

ok for the record i hate v6 camaros, i think its rediculous that chevy ruined the camaro name by makin those pieces of crap, i just wondered why they sounded better and they do. and I still love our cars, and htye sound fine stock, just don't like them with aftermarket mufflers i've heard, although i havn't heard a frakencar. But i still love our cars.

calm down there Matt, I wasn't saying anything about your car knowledge...you have 4 posts here, that makes you a "newbie" here....I was a newbie here once (still kind of a newbie compared to some guys) and I had rebuilt from the ground up several British classic cars over the last decade.....

newbie /= new to cars, only new to the forum.

I just thought the "giggling" part was funny

Agreed!

The Frankecar with only an intake (no other exhaust mods) that I have heard sounded quiet like stock at idle and low RPMs, and had a smooth, mellow tone at higher RPMs...about as close to a Euro-car sound as you can get with the maxima, in my opinion....I am getting FC next spring for those reasons.

The frankencar exhaust sounds pretty good actually. Almost reminiscent of a Lexus IS300 with exhaust. If I ever decide to put some type of exhaust on my car. That's exactly what I'd be looking for.

when i pulled up to mobil to get some gas, this mid-life cirisis geek was sitting there fueling his new 500sl. He gave me such a look when he heard my maxima (just pulling in). It was so funny because i gave him a look, like "why the hell are you looking at me dork", then when he pulled out, he floored his car, in effort to show off.

I guess the headers/catback does get all kinds of attention, and although it might not sound like a ferrari, or x car, it sounds real good to me. The car is what it is, and it has it's own sound. I don't want to try and emulate the sound of another car, and our sound seems to be unique to our cars. This is such a bad thing??

Apparantly he noticed heh.

For the record it isn't that hard to "build" an 11 second WS.6. since they run low 13's stock.

with all due respect to you mjg.....I somehow doubt he was wowed by your exhaust. I mean after all he is driving a 500SL and you are driving a maxima (I love maximas, but..... )

If I had a 500SL I'd show off too!

Thanks for all the replies so far.. I know I cannot get the exact sound as a 250K car but I am using my desire as a reference point for the sound I desire. I really like the sound of the frankencar catback but wonder how much louder than stock it is during idle and hwy cruise. I am really leaning towards a y-pipe as it is and am wondering if anyone has a sound clip of the 3.0 with a y-pipe and resonator removed to compare with frankencar. My only other performance mod is a frankencar intake. Thanks

It was $1100 for the whole exhaust system with install and a y-pipe. but the exhaust has recently settled and broken in so now it sounds just like a clean muscle car with that likje water bubbly sound.

Well its like building a sub 13 second max, not its not that hard to do, but if you've done it you can't really be conisedered a newbie to cars
