Is 300HP possible and reliable w/o NOS???

Has anyone gotten 300 hp out of their 3.5? If so, what mods helped accomplish that?

Actually right now it might be difficult to get to 300 with the mods currently available. Dont quote me. But there will be some new intake manifolds coming out soon that will make it easy to reach that goal.

Is your 300hp figure at the crank or at the wheels?

he probably means crank.. I dont think you could hit 300fwhp without a turbo.

Im at about 290+ crank hp now, so 300 won't be difficult.

Or if I go by the Nissan scale I am at about 317hp.

300HP is not really all that unattainable at the crank. Basically, youd have to be pushing 255WHP in an manual or 231WHP in an automatic (15% loss on manual, 23 on auto) to achieve the goal. I have personally seen automatics push 210FWHP and 217FWHP (272 and 281 crank) with Intake, Y, B, and Cat, and TS ECU. Im sure that with the new IM, cams, and lighter internals, 300 crank hp is not far away...

yeah I was meaning 300 at the crank. the car runs just fine now and is plenty fast for an auto, but i want to get to 300hp on motor and then plan on at least 100-150hp worth of NOS. is this going to be reliable though, keep in mind the NOS won't be on every day, but occasionally will be on the weekends. how strong are these 3.5 motors? I am kind of new to imports and their components so, I hope i don't sound too stupid asking these questions, i am just not an expert on imports, i know more about american v-8's.

wholy ****! What would you say your 0-60 is, and what is your 1.4 mile time? You amaze me all the time, I didnt think 300 was possible without a turbo, but then I forget your are dynoing 249fwhp with your IM.

the block is rated to 550hp, after that, the cylinders are likely to begin deforming. At 300 crank HP, i wouldnt run NOS. This is mostly due to the horsepower shock to the engine and driveline.

Totally understandable.. You want to know what your car is capable of, we all do.. Dont worry about stupid questions, you have under 100 post... I have over 1700 and I still ask stupid questions.

NOS is a company.

The VQ can handle a 100-150 shot of Nitrous all day so long as it is installed and tuned properly.

All you need to get to 300+ crank hp is Headers, my Secret Sauce Intake Manifold, exhaust, a TS ECU and possibly cams. The only thing I lack right now is the cams and TS ECU but Im certain I can get to 260fwhp without the cams.

Once I get my hands on a VQ40DE longblock I will set my sights on 300whp NA.

Will you still be able to retain the higher redline (with ecu) with a 40de longblock?

That isn't what the guy at AEBS says. And from what I have seen I see no reason why a stock block can't handle much more than that. The thing is made from high pressure die cast Aluminum and has a deck about halfway down the bores anyway. This block is VERY strong. It's only the rods and rod bolts that are questionable.

I certainly hope so. I would hate to toss a rod out of the side of the block when I spin it to 7200.

According to my calculations I should be at 296 crank HP assuming a 20% loss to the wheels with an auto. Did I calculate this correctly?

Is this really feasible? I mean using the VQ40 Longblock. Do you think the current VQ35 cams would be transferable to the VQ40? Hope you can pull it off. I think I'd rather go for an increase in displacement than FI.

I will do it and it will work. The ONLY question in my mind is how soon can I get it and how much to I have to pay for the parts.

03BlkSETE : I got 298.8 using 249 * 1.2. I used 20% when the car was stock to clam 240 crank hp form my 200whp. And I have a 6 speed.
I just tell people 290.

I suppose we all need to agree on an accurate percentage to use for the 6 speed, I would say that 15% is way too low. According to the Nissan scale it's about 27.5%.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what percentage to use with the auto either.

If you don't mind, when you figure out the VQ40 swap, I'll be driving down to NC to get in line for the same thing.

I think the manual is 15-18% loss and the auto is 23% exactly.

On the block, I dont remember my source for the power claim. I would like to hear what the guy at AEBS has to say, cause if 550 is too low, we need to tell SSR engineering so they can come up with a stronger boost package.

Actually the correct calculation is:

whp/[1-(est. drive train loss)] = chp

so in my case with 223/0.85= 262.4 (15% est drive train loss)
or if I used my dyno numbers 205.72whp/240chp I get 0.85717
so 223/0.85717= 260.2
If I use 20% I get 278.8
Your actual number would be 311.3

Also if you note:
stock 205.7whp/0.8=257.2chp If your est. drive train loss is correct then I got the actual estimated power for the maxima.

I think yall need to swap them 6spds out for a 5spd Who needs that mega tall overdrive anyways ? Unless you wanna break the land speed record in a Maxima... I don't think U will need to go any faster than 160MPH a DE-K motor can do in 5th with 6800RPM fuel cut.

The 6th gear is the same as the 4th gear in any nissan 00-03 auto. in fact, the ratios are the same in the manuals 1st,2nd, 4th, and 6th as the autos 1-2-3-4.
If you have the TS ECU, you can theoretically go 182mph at the same RPM. Ive seen it done on the dyno, but there is no way it will happen on the street with the power we are making. FYI, 80mph in 6th should be 3k rpm.

Um, I beg to differ....
I have a 2k3 auto and I run about 300rpm's higher cruisin at 70 than my friend does in his 2k2 6spd....

differ all you like, you have some slippage or tires that are a different size than stock. The ratios are the same. Ive confirmed it against 3 differnt 6 speeds and 2 other automatics.

Don't the 6spd trannies lose more than 15% to the wheels?

These are the gear ratios for the 6spd:
1st-3.153
2nd-1.944
3rd-1.392
4th-1.055
5th-.809
6th-.630
REVERSE-3.002

for the AUTO:
1st-2.785
2nd-1.545
3rd-1.000
4th-.694
REVERSE-2.272
FINAL DRIVE-3.789

Why even waste your money...buy a Twin Turbo Z or something. At least if you put money into those for HP, you get your money's worth. You have to put some big $$$ to get any descent HP out of these cars..Same goes for the 350Z...big $$$$

Not really, the parts for the maxima are MUCH cheaper than those for the 350. To realize the same amount of gain, the Z is much more expensive. But if you base it purely on speed, then the Z is prob cheaper.

With a small invenstment these cars will beat a 300ZX TT and be more reliable doing so. If you feel your car is a waste of money then perhaps you should get rid of it.

How do you figure a Maxima mod for mod will beat a 300ZX TT. A stock 300ZX TT come with 300HP/289 TRQ. Our Maxima has 255Hp/240TRq. Do you realize when i had my TTZ just a JWdual pop intake, greddy exhaust, JW ecu, lighter flywheel , greddy dual blow off valves, blitz ilarge intercooler netted me shy over 400+HP/390+whp . And that wasn't even touching internals.

For you to even get that much HP in a mAX you will have to have a supercharger or turbo w/ serious internals under your hood and it will cost you more than just 1800 to achieve it.

The MAX can't hold a candle to a 300ZX tt stock or modded. Period.

Forgot to mention i had a lighter driveshaft and was around 12 lbs of boost(stock 7-8lbs)
