Drivablility issue... help appreciated
I bought my maxima with 59,000 miles on it about four months ago, it ran perfectly. It now has 68,000 miles and is just starting to shake a little at idle about 700 miles ago(when I swithched to using chevron 91). Not really rough, but it is progressing. I've been reading the forums and noticing the coils usually need replacing... Is this on all 00 maximas? I can get the coils from my work for $50 a peice but that adds up if your changing all six. What about the factory plugs? They say 105,000 miles but I don't believe it, along with the whole "not serviceable" fuel filter. I bought this car thinking that it would last as long or longer as my last nissan (a 95 200sx with 160,000 miles that I never replaced anything but the clutch and regular tune-up items on)
Any idea? which coils usually need replacement? I'm not going to the dealer for service either, I do all of my own work
Thank you
Alex

first of all, you should be using Super in the car, not mid-grade. If the shaking started when you started using chevron 91, then it stands to reason that it's the gas that's causing your problem....

what irish said+ pcv, throttle body cleaning, spark plugs, maf, coils. before doing anything to the fuel filter, run bk44(SP). it is probably the gas you are using. but also could be othe things i mentioned above. all 6 coils should be replaced. if you max is a 2k, do you know what type of maintainence has been done to it?

Thanks, everyone.
Chevron 91 is the BEST gas you can find in Phoenix. Mid-grade is 87. I looked at the price of the coils and they are now $70 a peice, a little steep for a college student budget. By the way, there is no check engine light on yet. I have all maintenance records; Regular oil changes and a replaced O2 sensor 70 miles after I bought the car. I've used BG44k in previous cars, that stuff is a miracle, but the maxima's owners manual says strictly,"Do not use fuel additives."
If you ask me, ignition coils and a MAF are waaaaaay to much maintenance for a car with only 68k on it...
Thank you for your feedback

Hold on...there are a lot of assumptions in this thread already. FYI....91 is the best you can get in most locations on the west coast. I've been running 91 in my 2k with no problems such as Alex has mentioned. It's easy to check the PCV. Pull it out and shake it. If it rattles, then it's ok. If it doesn't rattle then it is stuck and you need to replace it. The first thing I would check and replace are the spark plugs. If they are the original when the car was first purchased new then they definitely need replacing. They DO NOT last 100,000 miles.
If I were you I would go through the entire car and do the 30/60 tune up. I assume that you have no prior maintenance records on the car? If not, go ahead and do the 30/60 tune up. You are bound to uncover something.
As with the fuel filter it really doesn't need servicing at all. I have had mine without service for 97,000 miles and no problems. I also have never ran my car out of gas, doing so can suck contaminants in the filter.
Ignition coils and MAF should not need replacing, but there are technical service bulletins out for the ignition coils. If you find after doing the 30/60 tune up that nothing has changed I would get the TSB and see if it applies to your VIN. If so, take it in to the dealer and see if they will do it under the TSB. I am not sure, but I believe the TSB applies up to 60,000 miles. Some dealers will extend that.
Good luck.

Thank you very much, I'll check the tsb's. Previous maintenance shows that nothing but oil changes and air filter changes have been done... I was thinking of doing the plugs anyway. Proably next week. I was hoping the future of my maxima would not be so grim...
