It was around 9:30pm Saturday night, I was minding my own business going to my inlaws house, when I see through my rear viea a black Chevy Impala (the previous generation) zooming through traffic at very fast speeds. He happens to pull up next to me at a red light, and it is pretty obvious he wanted to race. I knew that I was outmatched, my Maxima SE auto had no chance vs. that beast, but when the light turned green I gunned it and so did he. He had me beat right from the go so at around two car lenghts I started slowing down. At that point my radar detector lit up like a Christmas tree and beeping like mad. Ofcourse I slowed down even more, now at speed limit. The idiot in the Impala kept going probably going over 100mph easily, and blasting through traffic. Next thing I know a police cruiser buzzed right by me hauling butt after the Impala. Phew!..that could have been me. I lost the race, I guess the guy in the Impala can brag to his cell mate that he beat a Maxima in a race.

Serves him right for buying a Chevy. What is the appeal to a car like that? It has a big engine. So what. Impalas need to go on a diet and loose about 500 lbs and a foot in length. Those are big cars.

Dude it must have had mods. 5 speed Maximas kill those Impala SS' by almost 1/2 a second to sixty and 1/4 mile.

Are you on crack? That $hit is almost as fast as a corvette. I don't know what kind of impala would lose to a Max. The last time I raced one, he killed me by about half a block. I don't **** with Impalas, Mustangs & Grand ams after that. Even a Lincoln Town car will kill a Max.

This was when I had a 4thgen.. Raced the SCed grand am & lost. Linclon TC was neck & neck until we hit like 80miles. Then he started to move up little by lil and I couldn't catch up... Of course I smoked a bowl of crack b4 I raced... But seriously,... Those old imaplas are fast...

Uh. the Impala SS runs to 60 in 7.1 sec. It does the quarter mile in 15.5.
The max runs to 60 in 6.7. The quarter mile in 15.1.

In the original post above he stated the previous generation Impala which had the LT1 275 HP engine. These engines were under rated at 275. I had a 94 Formula with the LT1 and had Borla, fresh air intake, Hypertech and a few extras. I raced one of the hogs one day and beat him by only about 1 1/2 car lengths. They had a less restrictive exhaust and better intake but were rated the same as the Formula, Trans Am and Camaros with the LT1. The new Impala SSs only have 200 HP.

this was a previous gen. Impala SS and I have a Maxima SE automatic. If I had a 5 speed it might have been a better challenge, but this guy had me beat hands down. I don't care anyway, he got the speeding ticket, not me!.

You are being given the wrong impression that the Impala SS is fast! Trust me, its not! It's a cheap piece of shit! These things looks fast, but they aren't!

Those Impalas are easy to mod, but even stock they are mad fast. Next time, challenge him through the twisties. They handle like crap. Good for your radar detector. Seems like they always light up when your doing 60.

I raced a ss Impala today on the highway. I do not know If it was modified or not but when he opened it up it was no catching it.

It is cheap American muscle, but sure was FAST!....mods or not that guy was flying. The cop car didn't even have time to turn his lights or siren on. The Impala guy merged into the highway and the cop followed. I didn't even get a chance to see the actual stop, but I am sure the Impala gave the cop's Ford Crown Victoria a good sprint. You never know, maybe the SOB got away.

By the way these are the specs on the 1996 Impala SS

5.7 liters
Base Engine Type: 8 cyl 5.7 L
Horsepower: 260 hp @ 5000 rpm
Torque: 330 ft-lbs. @ 2400 rpm

From an Impala site:

"This modified LT1 powerplant may have less horsepower than the one used for the Corvette, but it has almost as much torque, which helps this two ton cruiser to a 0-to-60 time of around 7 seconds and a mid-15 second quarter mile at 90 mph"

Why are you guys racing V8's for? Lincoln Town Cars?? Impalas?? Don't waste your $1.99/gallon of gas on them.

Humiliation should come to owners of TL's, IS300's, GS300's, 328i's, Preludes and Subie WRX's(maybe)when they go against the "MAX".

My friend has run 15.1 in his '96 Wimpala SS (stock). I'm racing him this Saturday. They have a nice SC kit for this car too.
