SERVICE ENGINE SOON-advise

Ok it's been a while since I have been here (missed you guys) so I'm sure
this has been addressed but I need to ask.

My "service engine soon" light has come on and I called a friend of mine that works at Nissan who said maybe gas cap, o2 sensor etc...

While on my way to the dealership the light went out but later it came back on again.

Any ideas? Or can you guys think of anything I should try or beware of.

Much Thanks..

This is a 03 max by the way.

Same thing has been happening with my 02 Maxima. The light will come on and stay on for a few days and then go off for a few days. If it comes on again I'll go to Autozone and find out what the problem is.

It's normal for Maxima's from my experience. I have the light on on both my '02 and '99 Maxima's. I've followed the sticky post instructions on resetting the light (involves turning a gain screw on the computera few times and counting the blinking sequence) and the code that always comes back is " no error reported ". A few days later the light will come on again and I'll have to reset again and get the same no error code. After repeating the scenario five times in two weeks I stopped this fruitless routine and got used to the light. A week ago I purchased a 2002 Max for my wife and after one day of driving the dreaded light came on. I'm not even going to bother resetting it. It's irritating but at least its a pretty dull and unintrusive light. The 02 only has 43k on it and it's in mint condition so I'm not too worried.

Once again the light went off on mine. I was going to take it to the dealership today
but of course it has gone off (coming to work). Mine is a 2k3 with only 37,000 miles on it.

if the light comes on, you car may go into "safe mode". this causes your car to basically run extremely rich with minimal power and response. it also wilol cause your throttle body to become so dirty that it itself will set the check engine light on. Autozone's OBD2 code scanner is capapble of telling you which sensor is going nuts, but it definately does not diagnose the problem or even give you a realistic idea of what's going on. you need the dealership's Nissan Assist tool the properly diagnoses your problems. DON'T IGNORE THAT LIGHT AND DON'T GO TO AUTOZONE

Cool!! Ok I have an appointment with my mech at Nissan for next Friday. I'm going to try and leave it in garage until then and drive my wife's car. We can commute, hopefully if I have to drive it to work (25 miles one way) it won't damage anything.

Thanks guys for all your input!!

mine too

SES lit-up for the first time about 2k miles ago, went-off after the first 1k miles - came back on again at 2k.

Always on the hwy only.

I'm going to the dealer to get to the bottom of this.

2k2 max with 26700 on the ticker.

Personally -- I could NOT deal with that light on all the time...I'm too ****.
