Fried 5spd Today Help!!
Tonight,
stats: 2k max se 5spd 64k with redline mt-90
I was backing out a long driveway, gave it a some gas, got going kinda fast(4-5k rpm). Then i let off the gas to let that car coast and i heard a loud high pitched klunk. Car skidded to a stop with the fron wheels locked.
Now here the deal.
I can barely move the lever into any gear except 2 3 and i can REALLY force (i mean weight and all) into reverse and other gears. In neutral position, i can let off the clutch and the car goes like its in 2nd. If i force it into reverse, its wont go anywhere but you can feel a slight bugging backwards. WTF happend.
any ideas???

I had a similar problem happen to mine at 65k roughly a month ago. I was turning left and my car made a clunk noise and I lost 1 and 3. I pulled over about a 1/4 down the road and when I stopped my car was smoking. There was fluid all over the ground and it was hitting my hot y-pipe. I towed the car into the dealer and they blamed it on abuse, blah blah blah. I called Nissan consumer to see if they could do anything about it because the car had a new tranny put it at 15,500 miles, since the original was defective. Nissan basically told me they couldn't do a thing, not even goodwill. I went to the dealer to inspect the tranny with a friend who has spent the last 25 years building race and show cars. He immediatly pointed out that the cause of the problem was the wrist pin holding the differential together. The Nissan mechanic was shocked because I really don't think he noitced it. The only way that the wrist pin can come out would be because of defect. I was told by my friend that the wrist pin is stamped in at the factory and abuse would not cause that. We also inspected the clutch and flywheel and they looked fine. When the pin came loose, it basically caused my diff to gernade into a bunch of peices, which in turn blew a whole in the tranny housing. Even after pointing this out, Nissan would do nothing.
I ended up buying a used tranny with 28k miles on it and installed it myself. I also had to buy a new clutch disc because it had oil over it. A buddy and I installed the new tranny in about 4 hours. I personally would never buy another Nissan after this situation. Nissan builds a great engine; the VQ is world class. It seem though that they arent so great at designing transmissions and/or the quality of their manufacturing process is lacking. I have had nothing but problems with my Maxima, which sucks because it's a great overall package.

heh as far as trans problems... the only ones I've noticed is very occasional (~once a week?) popping out of 4th gear on the highway. Always catches me off guard. Plus sometimes 4th gear feels a little weird going into gear, like even with the clutch pedal floored it has a slight crunchyness. I occasionally feel that with other gears though (used to on 3rd, sometimes on 2nd), so I never think much of it. The popping out of gear worries me though.
I'm about due for a fluid change. ~50K miles on the Redline MT-90 in there... (which didn't make much of a difference for me, BTW)

Well believe it or not. I took it to a mechanic and he and some other pros looked at it and said it was trashed. But i decided to go to the dealer b/c they replaced my engine(under warranty) only 7k miles ago. On my way there, the transmission started functioning properly. Its currently being inspected there. I'll post any findings.
