Steering wheel rattles on highway...

Sometimes when I am driving on the highway, 65+ mph, my steering wheel will rattle. It only does this sometimes, not all the time. It doesn't violently shake, just rattles a little, enough so that I can feel it and my hand shakes a little while resting on the wheel. Any ideas on whats the problem or how I can fix it?

The first thing I would think of is that the tires are out of balance. How long has it been since you had them rotated and balanced? Secondly, sometimes a vehicle that is out of alignment will also have a little steering wheel vibration.

It's been about 15k miles since I got new tires. I haven't rotated them yet. I'll try rotating them, and if that doesn't work I guess I'll take it in for an alignment.

Get an alignment and tire balancing.

Also in addition to what ^he^ said, it could be a warpped rim. Just a thought.

Mine seems to do this a bit too.
I just got new tires, balanced, alignment, even new hubs and brakes. Still I feel a mild vibration on smooth roads dong 50 - 60 mph.

Not sure what it is...

Maxes have shown to be extremely sensitive to balance, tires with irregularities in their banding/belting that might cause a road force variation, radial pull or any one of those ills -specially with 17" or larger wheels....

Find a shop that has a Hunter 9700 Road Force analyzer & have the tires & wheels balanced using that machine....

I normally make it a habit to not go more than 10k miles without getting the tires at least rotated. Normally when I get them rotated, I can find a special somewhere that will do the balance too for not much more. For one it reduces the wheel vibration and two helps extend the life of my tires (albeit the POS Potenzas -- wouldnt mind seeing them go a little quicker )

DEF what^he^said, but also check your tire pressure as well. Ya never know, one or 2 may be off and yuo may not be feeling it until it hits that speed.
