Engine /Timing Chain Rattle?
Hi Folks
Still have powertrain wty on my beaut, so I have this q:
In the last month, I have also started experiencing a rattle while in gear acclerating/revving. Its coming from inside (the top half?) area of the engine.
Anytime there is a load on the engine, on a slight incline, etc, it sounds ike a tapping at first, but the chain rattle is all to familar to me.
At first I thought it might have been a loose exhaust plate, but now I am almost certain this is a timing chain rattle in the engine. I changed my sparkplugs to NGK Iridiums yesterday, and while revving the throttle by hand, it exsts as a much sharper rattle between the 2-3000 rpm range, jus tilke my old 240. I have noticed that this is an issue with 4th gen.. considering th eengine is the same in the '00s, are we prone to it as well?
I'm sorry for asking something realy obvious, I looked back 7-8 pages in this forum and didn't see anything, and noticed posts that the search feature was offline.
Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction?
Work I've done on it has been Regular oil changes, always only a nissan oil filter, good non syn 5w30 oil, no leaks or sweats anywhere I can see of fluids.
I've had to replace my sparkplugs about 12k early because they were already gone.
much obliged,

The Coils have already been replaced once under wty.. My understanding was the flaw in them was fixed.... am I wrong?
Just to clarify, I also get the sound when driving on normal flat roads as well. It hasn't been as bad teh last few days, but I haven't been driving as much, or for long periods of time.
It seems to come up when the engine warms up ... could that leave knocking as the cause?
Thanks for your time

It does sound like detonation. A possibility is the MAF--the 2000 is notorious. My 2000 started pinging badly accelerating on a flat highway and pulling dipped around 3,300 RPM. I had already replaced the plugs and found number 6 with a fully rounded electrode, almost melted. Because of the great people here I was sure the MAF had gone sour w/o throwing a code. Sure enough, that was it.
Love the Max. The 2K sure does have its share of challenges though.
