Air Flow Meter Died

Last weekend, I was running my car with my buddy's WRX. We were about 80~90, but when I shifted from 3ed to 4th, and I pushed gas the engine died.
I pull over, then tried to start engine. My car cannot start.
I tow my car to Nissan dealer. They tell me, I need to replace Air Flow Meter and reprogram ECU. It cost 300.
I have Berk intake with K&N. Can someone tells me why it happens?

go pick up the car, unplug the MAF and drive it home. Order up the MAF from Dave B or some online Nissan dealership for around 100 bux, install it yourself and its set. I have blown 4 like you did, I'm on the 5th one now. The new ones are good, make sure the buy the whole assembly like I did with the 5th one <knock on wood still good>.
