Brakes...

How much should it cost me to get the brakes done on my car. I'm not trying to get ripped off.

I believe its like $400 from the dealer. If you go locally, it will probably run you over $200.

But if you are handy, you can do it yourself which would save you a lot of money.

Thank you both. I am in New Jersey and alot of the shops around my way are shady. I'm not an idiot when it comes to cars. I know my stuff. But I am new to the 2002 Maxima. Thanks for the replies. Any users in NJ got different pricing information?

In brooklyn, the dealer wants 190 for front and like 180 for back. But some of the shops can do it for around 200 altogether.

you need a special tool to turn the rear brakes rather than C-clamp the fronts. A little tricky and time consuming without the right tools

Ouch!!!!! If pads cost $70 (from the Nissan dealer) for the the front, and you have a good jack and some tools, I would definitely DIY!!!! It should take about 15 minutes a side, as the fronts are very easy to change on a 5th gen. I have done mine and a couple other peoples. The rears require a tool that you can pick up at SEARS for like $15. Once you get the tire off, there are only two other bolts (14mm i think) to take the caliper off. Pads snap in and out, then just use a c-clamp to reset the front calipers. Replace everything, then trun on the ignition, and pump the brake pedal (the first time it should go almost to the floor). After a few pumps (3-4) it should feel normal. The whole process should take no more than 45 minutes. And the best part is that you now got an extra $200 for mods. HAPPY MOTORING!

maseo77,
Good question...I can't remember what it is called. But it is basically a 1 inch cube shaped tool, designed to be used as a socket. It has six different sides. It should be in the section with car maintenence tools (filter tools, etc.) Hope that helps, I will look around to see if I can get something more specific.

****UPDATE****
Lisle Disc Brake Piston Tool

Sears item #00946344000 Mfr. model #28600

That should point you in the right direction!

Instead of buying the tool you could just use a pair of needle nose plyers. Just make sure you push hard and turn really slow!

I wouldn't do that on my car. If you go to Autozone, Advanced Auto, Pep Boys, Sears, or any other place where you can buy car tools, get one there. It is a universal tool that can be used on any car. I bought one and have used it on about every kind of car from Impreza's to Sables. Basically a 1/4" driver extension plugs into it. You place it over the caliper cylinder, turn and push. The cylinder will collaspe pretty easily.

I had a buddy try to cheat it once and it cost him a new rear caliper. Believe me, that was a little more expensive than the tool.

So you only need this tool on the rear brakes? So just to clarify, use this tool to turn the pistons clockwise to get them to push back in? I'm about to dive into this after just purchasing my '03. I have drum brakes on the back of all my cars, so this is different.

Thanks! You guys are the best. I called up a few local shops and found the lowest pricing to be $230. No rotor issues like I previously thought. I appreciate the help.

I install pads all the way around for $80 bucks (40/axel), labor only - you supply the pads.
That includes flushing your brake fluid.

Kits also include SS lines, rear rotors and pads.
That's not bad. Can I order those from you or something? You sell them or what?

My boss had all four rotors replaced along with new pads..... it ran him $600 from
Midas. I think he got ripped off. I told him he should have asked me and I could have done it for him for much less.

I would definitely love to get the brakes for my car. Do I order them through you or a webpage? How much should I be charged for the install? I'm trying to get this done quickly.
