newbie question - RPM meter

Here's a stupid question. What purpose does the RPM meter serve? Obviously it is supposed to indicate some information to the driver. Is it useful for manual transmission cars or is there a purpose on automatic transmission cars too? Can someone please shed some light on this?

not very useful on an auto, but on a manual you use it to know when to shift

not to be an a$$ but what is this about you could ask one of your parents and they can tell you. and obviously you dont have a manual and have never wanted to go fast or you would have experimented with your shiftpoints and stuff but again no need to flame here but i havent seen this noob of a question for a while now -Ryan

Understand your frustration but isn't that the whole point of this forum? That the know-nothings can benefit from the knowledge and experience of the know-alls. I am sure there are tons of people here that did not know what a tachometer was for and were afraid to ask for the fear of someone criticizing them for not knowing. As long as I learn ... don't care what people think.
