painting engine cover

i decided to do a little engine dressup (a.k.a. broke & looking to do cheap mods). i want to paint the engine cover and eventually the valve cover. im no expert at this... should i sand the engine cover down first or just paint over the orginal paint?

I posted the same thing on Tuesday. I'm having mine painted right now. You will need to sand and prime both to get a good adheision. When mine is done (I'm also getting the grill painted to match the car as well), I'll post pics. I wasn't able to find anyone else who has done this yet, so I'm the guinee pig. I'll let you know of any problems.

Since the cover is some type of plastic, i would suggest doing a light sanding with real light sandpaper. Primer the sucker, with high temperature primer to get a good base and also use high temperature paint. You'd be surprised how hot that thing gets. This would probably be the way i'd go at it.

Hey Manaz101: did you take the chrome out of your headlights? I saw a write-up on that a while back but never saw any pics.

What do you mean, did i paint my housings? The answer to that is no. I've left mine the regular way. If you want to see what painted housings look like check out Studman's website here, he did his.

i was thinking 2-tone silver & black. paint the originally red part on the engine cover black and the "NISSAN" black then the rest in silver. then paint the valve cover black as well.
