High cost of keys

Is there any way around the high cost of getting additionall keys for a 2001 Maxima?....dealers want a fortune for a programmed key and lots for the related remote? What happened to the $3 keys I get for my other two older Maxima's which I still own?

Not bad eh,.....I have 3 Maxima's.
I know the security is better, but the cost seems too high .

you are paying for the security chip in the key. then you have to program the chip to work on your car.
at least the remote you can do yourself

Reeves, look in your yellowpages under locksmiths - some will definitely have ads right there - check if they do auto - and if they do, check if they do programmable or transponder keys..... then call them up ... you can get it done for about $70-80, saving you about $50 or more from the dealer..

i called a few places in Baltimore, and i'm considering going with one..but make sure it is a reputable company..

I purchased two blanks from this guy on ebay.

I got a local locksmith to cut & program them both for $ 42.00

So I paid about $ 75.00 for two keys,.

i have a question regarding the remote start. if you buy an uncut key and get it programmed, that's all they need right. it doesn't necessarily have to be cut does it. they just need the immobilizer function correct?
