New key

Does anyone know the ins and outs of getting a new key made at a dealer? Can they do it off your VIN? Or do they need the car there.

The dealers rip ya off. Something like 50 bucks for the key, and then about the same to program. I bought 2 keys off ebay for 14 each, and a local locksmith cut and programmed both for 29 bucks. 2 keys for under $60, versus about 200 bucks at dealer.

you serious? thats pretty good. I work at a dealership key cost is $20 to $30 depending on which one you have and programing will cost half hour of labor.

so your looking at pretty close to $60 for a key.
I recommend buying a key off of ebay and just getting it cut from a lock smith and see if they can program it.

oh yeah and yeah you can get a key cut from the vin number just show some proof of ownership.

haha i have the same problem, i lost my alarm keypad and now i cant put my alarm on. I went to nissan and they said it would be $40 to program a new alarm... aka take the alarm box out and put a new one using the same wires.. takes about half hour to do.. and i dont even wanna think how much the key would cost...

Dunno, my keys magically got up and walked off. I have never misplaced them before and I always use the keyfob to lock the car when I am done. I have looked all over here with no luck. This situation is draining. My car is sitting there unattended and I do miss it.

Well, that sucks man......but considering the weather outside right now (i.e. snow) maybe it could be worse, lol.

Unfortunately I do have my keys and they will be turning my car on tomorrow and taking me to the tag agency where I am gonna have to drop about 700 on tax and registration since I still haven't gotten the registration in OK yet. That's gonna put me in a tight spot.

BTW - what about an OKC Hooters night again sometime next week?

Damn that is tough news. Oklahoma and their F'n taxes. I could do another Maxima night provided someone decides to make the scene here in OK.

Glory be. My keys have appeared. Damn seat cushions. I already looked there once.
Well at least I can take the keys I ordered and take them to the locksmith instead of pay for them to come out here.
BTW, I got two keys from this guy.
2000-2003 Nissan Maxima Transponder Key Blank
I ordered them on Tuesday and I received Thursday morning in the mail. He sent them Priority Mail for me instead of regular mail because I was in a bind. This guy was very easy to deal with and very accomadating. I highly recommend him if you need keys. I got the keys for $15.99 instead of $50 from the dealer.

The locksmith didn't know this for some reason. But you do have to have all transponder keys reprogrammed at the same time. The remote will still work regardless.
