Steering wheel stereo control problems

Have an 01 w/the steering wheel stereo controls. At times they work fine, other times they are overly sensitive (hit the track button once and it jumps two tracks). At other times, not sensitive at all (have to press and hold down for it to change tracks). Also, sometimes when turning it will change modes (switch from radio to CD, CD to tape, etc). Positive that I'm not accidentally hitting the buttons mid-turn

Thoughts? Dirty contacts? Way to clean/repair? Or are they just going bad and would need to be replaced? (which I would guess would be an expensive fix?)

Thanks in advance!

I have the same kind of problem with my '01 SE, but I just live with it. Don't know if there is any way to fix the problem.

Here's another thread on the subject:

Peace.

Upsatemax, when you say unit, do you mean the button unit or is there something else back behind the steering wheel?

I don't think so, unless your harness can add those in. Otherwise way too much trouble.

Yeah, but if you get a pac swi-x you can retain funtionality of the steering controls for your aftermarket hu. I have an aftermarket hu.

Got the new part yesterday. Apparently its black and mine is grey. Going to have to call the dealer on that. But worst of all, it looks like the airbag is going to have to come out to get to the buttons
