Mass Air Flow Meter

I had a failure lately where the mass air flow meter was failing intermittantly. What exactly is this and what does it do? As you may guess I am not automotively inclined but I learn fast.

the mass air flow is responsible for determining the air/fuel ratio at wide open throttle and is partly responsible at partial throttle along with the primary o2 sensors. they have an updated part for the maf since a good many of them failed on early build 00 & 01 and even more on 2k2's. the new part number has proved very worthy and i have not seen a failure yet. if you replaced it through the dealer you probably paid a pretty penny but just for reference they can be purchased for around 85 shipped and takes about 5-10 mins to replace.

i got mine from jerryromenissan.com. use MAXIMA as a promotional code for 12% as an additional discount. another good alternative is calling dave burnette @ 888-254-6060. he works for a dealer in TX and has great prices/quick shipping.

My 2000 SE was recently purchased and the Service Engine soon light comes on and off intermittently. The dealer says Mass Flow meter and "reprogramming the computer" for $500. I found a new Mass Flow for about $100 but was intimidated by the reprogramming. My local mechanic says that Nissan won't give the programming data to independent shops like his. Sounds like a ripoff to me. Can one of your old hands give me the straight poop as to how to correct this problem at reasonable cost. I am reasonably capable mechanically.

My SES light came on about 65k or so...codes P0171 and P0174...fuel injection system bank 1 & 2 lean. Brought it to the dealer and had it fixed under extended warrantee for $100 deductible. They also reprogrammed the ECU...total cost $100. BUT, I've seen posts here where people just replaced the MAF w/out the reprogram and have had no problems at all.

As far as the reprogram goes, I'm pretty sure you have to be a Nissan dealer, or so, in order to get the updates/reprograms from Nissan. My father has his own shop and he cannot get them (for any make vehicle for that matter). Nissan has you by the ***** when it comes to this!

Exactly the same codes for me: P0171 and P0174. I guess the question to the forum is: Can simple mechanical replacement of the Mass Air Flow Sensor with the improved design that Sloppymax discusses above do the job alone, without any reprogramming. The light, can be shut off by a reset that any shop can do. Then you have a $85 part and a 10 minute changeout compared to the $500 that one dealer has quoted me.

Thanks in advance for any helpful input.
