Exhaust Tube Assembly?

Why would I need a "Exhaust system - Front pipe"? My dealer says my service engine soon light is calling for one along with a new "OXYGEN SENSOR, Front, Right". My 2001 Maxima has 71,000 miles. Can someone please explain what exactly is broken?

sounds like they might be referring to a precat possibly. the reason i assume that is because they are suggesting a new oxygen sensor as well. i would call them and ask for more detail instead of a generic description. also ask which o2 sensor it is.

It sounds to me like the dealership is just trying to screw you. You probably just need an O2 (Oxygen) Sensor and they are wanting to replace the entire Y-Pipe.

Since they've pulled the codes, ask them for the code numbers, post them here, and someone will explain to you what is going on. I'm almost willing to tell you right now, though, that its just an O2 sensor that needs to be replaced... which I think is covered under the Emissions Warranty before 80K (as is the Cat if that is bad, as well).

I agree... sounds like the front pipe they're referring to is the y-pipe and apparently that's a ton of money to replace the OEM pipe. If it really is just the O2 sensor, you shouldn't have to replace the entire pipe. Like everyone else has said... find out exactly what the problem is, whether its a busted y-pipe, precat, or O2 sensor, and post it up here.....

The code was:
420, low cat efficiency in bank1

The 80K warranty is only for the computer and the cat itself.

that code only need a software flash from a consult 2. it should be covered 8yr/80k miles. i have only heard a few times where the flash did not cure it and a new main cat was necessary.

A different Nissan dealership service manager said that he has replaced many front tube assemblies because the cat is failing and it kills the O2 sensor and the tube assembly. He couldn't explain exactly what the damage is to the tube assembly. Seems to me that if this is true then it is a known problem with the cat and the cat should be replaced too.
