ses light on...

Last night my SES light came on. Today i got the code pulled.

Code: P0420

This is the information they gave me...

The PCK has determined that the catalyst system efficiency for bank 1 is below threshold for the current engine operating conditions. (bank 1 dentifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 dentifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)

Does anyone have any idea what this means?

here the TSB off of studman's website. the code is typically cleared up by a flash done only by nissan consult 2. this is a diagnostic tool that the nissan/infiniti dealers use. this is covered 8yr/80k as mandated under a federally mandated emissions warranty. there have been a few instances where the code would repeat after the flash and a replacement of the main cat was in order.

Ok, so im reading about this code at other places and said we have warrenty. I have 93K on my car does it still fall in the warrenty?

Also, i am understanding this is not a bad cat. its the o2 senser. How can i get this fixed and the code to not pull anymore?

hahaha...i am sitting in the nissan dealership right now getting this checked out on my 2001. They said it is probely the cat converted and if you are below 80,000 miles they will slap a new one on for free, and not charge me for the CEL dignosis.

I got that code at 56K miles (about 4800 miles back, the stealer wanted $95 just to diagnose. *******). I and reset the ECU and it hasn't come back. At 93K miles it may be the real deal, but it may not hurt to reset the ECU and if it comes back that's your answer. My car didn't feel any different with that code.

If you don't have to go through emissions testing, you should be okay.

(I hope I didn't jinx myself on this one as I got the emissions checkup notice yesterday in the mail)

Unplug the negative terminal off the battery. Some people say to step on the brake pedal to make sure you drain any juice out of the system. I did that and left it unplugged overnight. You'll lose all the radio settings and trip odo readings, no biggie.
