new maxima owner! and a few questions

Recently I bought a 2000 SE sans the leather, manual, 68k miles for 9700 at a used lot in new york. It's very very cold now with this darn blizzard. I noticed that after I start the car, I hear a high pitched squeal for several seconds then disappears. And during idle, it smells of gas. Kinda new at this (first time car owner), so I assume from other posts that it would be a seeping fuel injector or leaking lines? Also, the gearbox feels sluggish/slightly gooey when I first drive off in the freezing mornings. Would love to hear your opinion! THanks

ps- did I get an alright deal on the car? just curious

it would be hard to tell from your explanation. if i were you, i'd just do a 60K tune up on it if i hasn't been done already and if there's anything wrong with your car, i am sure that Nissan tech will let you know.

P.S. I dunno about your price, but i will soon be selling my 2000 GLX with 55000 on it and in immaculate condition. if i get 10000 i will be extremely happy.

The squealing at start up is probobly just a loose belt. Not a big deal but should be taken care of.

The 5 speed in my 95 Max and the 6 speed in my 02 are a bit stiff when it gets cold. By cold I mean Florida cold not NY cold. As long as it feels good when it reaches operating temp I wouldn't worry.

The gassy idle can also be normal in the cold. Especially if the car is still cold. Your car has an electronic choke. When it's cold it will run richer (more fuel in the air fuel mixture) until it warms up. It seems pretty normal to smell gas at idle in the cold. If I'm wrong someone please correct me.

Good choice on the Max. I'm on my second one and I bought my wife a 00 Max. The price seems good also. I work on a car lot and we've sold 00s for more.

BTW if anyone is interrested we just picked up an 02 SE 6 speed in black with 34k. Nearly perfect condition going for $16,900. PM me for info.

I would put a remote starter on it so you would have it all yummy and warm by the time you got in it. A little wd40 may take the squeal away. Spray it on the hose while the car is running. Not in your face so keep clear of it. The belt may just be dry which is understandable with your weather.
