P0430 - How do I fix this

Couple questions. I have the P0430 code. I have done some searching and read other posts but have a few questions. I see some people have posted that this shoud be a ECU software upgrade to fix. I took a look at the TSB and it only mentions P0420. P0420 is bank 1 vs P0430 bank 2. I took the car in to the dealer and they are telling me I need to replace the pre cats. I was wondering if any one else has had the P0430 code and if it was fixed by the ECU update. I was thinking about just taking it back and asking them to see what version it is and if it is not at the version in that TSB to just update it to that version. Also if not the ECU update could it just be an O2 sensor?? Has anyone else had this code and the ECU update fixed the problem?? Any help would be appreciated.

Oh and not sure if matters but I replaced all 6 coils and new plugs because I had the coil code. The SES light stayed off for a day and then the P0430 came up. I have also heard something about if leaving the coils go to long could cause damage to the cat but not sure if that is true. Is it possible the pre cats burned up?? I would not care about the SES light becasue the car runs fine but because I live in PA I have to get it fixed to pass emmisions.

the ECU update won't fix the p0430.. get a new precat or 02 simulator...

I would try the TSB update, but most likely the dealer will play hardball and say it only applies to P0420.

Check your emissions warranty to see how many miles your catalytic convertors are covered in your state, in CA it's 80K IIRC.

Yes, if you have a misfiring coil, it could possibly destroy a cat.

Are you a Cali or Fed spec 2000?

I am Cali spec and it should have the 80k warranty which I am under. But like you said they will probably give me a hard time about doing the update no charge because of the P0430 code. I did let the coil issue go for over a month or so because of a local mechanics advice. It did not give a misfire code so he said maybe try and wait so we could find out which one was bad. Then I stumbled opon the .org and found it was a common problem. I guess I can try the update first and pay because it may need it anyway and it is cheaper than replacing the pre cats. Then if that does not work, replace them.

Sorry if this was brought up already. I found little on the P0430 code and could not find any info on bad coils burning up the pre cats, which is why I posted. Not trying to waste anyones time

Just because it's a Cali spec doesn't mean it's covered under the 80K warranty, since it varies state-to-state.

I'm 75% sure the P0420 and P0430 are the result of the SAME issue, ie aging catalytic convertors and too picky ECU limits. However, I don't know if the new ECU flash for the P0420 will also fix the ECU for the P0430, but it's worth a shot before replacing the cat like you said. Even if it doesn't, it's not a waste, since most likely the other cat will end up causing the P0420 later.
