Towing Capacity

I own a 2003 GLE and would like to pull a small boat however the manual states the maximum towing capacity is 1000 lb. Wondering why this is since 255 hp and 4 wheel discs should be plenty for a small boat and trailer with a weight less than 2500 lbs.

I know that the engine has more power for towing your boat. But what i am afraid of is your suspension will not hold that much for the 10% (the one hooked up on your trailer hitch).
I forced my 2000 Honda Accord EX which has the same towing capacity to bring around 1800 LBS a year ago, And now i regret it because the rear suspension saging. I don't know whether it is the correct word. My point is my rear suspension getting lower by .65 inches after towing about 700miles.
Hope this helps.

you own a car...if you want to tow something get a truck or SUV

the towing capicity if more then just "can my car pull it"
it has to do with the engine, brakes, suspension, and most importantly the transmission.

the maxima tranny is not heavy-duty enough to handle towing. That said, we used to tow a 22' sailboat with our our 1982 Audi and our 1979 Volvo 240 DL station wagon, which had like 140 hp tops....but it was RWD, of course..

I watched a guy pull a small camper...not a fold up camper but the ones that are like 20 ft or so...and his back end was almost touching the ground. There's no doubt the max's engine can tow that much, but the transmission is built for performance, not pulling. I thought it would be ok to tow a boat too considering dodge dakotas with the 4.7 and only 235 hp (vs. our 255) can pull almost 7,000 lbs. But they have a transmission that can take that load, our cars don't.
