Screeching sound right after start up.

Hi. My car makes a screeching sound for a split second right after I start up the engine.. anyone has a clue what it might be? I remember reading somewhere that it could be a belt issue. What do you think?

Btw, the car is a 5spd 2000 GXE with 90k miles. The belts have never been replaced yet.

Does it kind of sound like the screech when you accidentally turn the key, meanwhile the car is already on?

yup it sounds exactly like that. Have any ideas ?

And no, i'm not in Blacksburg anymore. Been out of school for few years now.. I miss the place terribly. But I still go to almost all home games.

replacing the belts won't hurt, could be them..is there any correlation between the weather and the noise: like starting in the rain vs. dry sunny weather?

If the car is being warmed up and has a screeching sound near the crank/belts, then you need to replace the belts....

It's probably the starter. Belts shouldn't make a screech that sounds like the ignition is grinding. Belts make more of a whine, not a screech.

try spraying some wd-40 on the belts to see if it still does that noise afterwards.

My 00 does it. I think it's the starter, though possibly the timing chain tensioner, though I've not _heard_ how these two possibilities can sound different, though I know both do cause start up sounds.

A screeching sound meaning "starter" -- the starter needs to be regreased. I did this a while back and haven't had cold start screeches since then. I had a detailed writeup posted on a similar thread some days back....

Yup just as said above, the write up is great for this "screeching sound" - It is the Starter grease that makes the noise when the car is started at a cold temp. I bet the sound doesnt happen to all you guys when the weather is nicer and warmer out, i know myself cause i have the same problem.
The starter regrease writeup will help our increadibly, but it does take some time to get to it.
As far as belts go and the tensioner, replacing them cant hurt (just the keep the car running smoothly and effiecently) but it be the 'right' fix for the problem at hand.
Hope this is a better explaination to the problem.

On my other car, it was due to worn out alternator belt. Replaced it and sound was gone.

Okay so i realized i got a defected pulley from nissan, which i replaced... So now I got this other noise still there, It seems like the compressor to me but my mechanic said its not that. Oh and He doesnt know what it could be.... great mechanic let me tell you. Im going to bring it to nissan and see whats up hopefully next week. It sounds like im driving a buick or something, its horrible. Oh yeah and now my radiator is cracked, and leaking from the top. I'm having a great day over here..
