Well there's an entire thread about it about 2 pages back, so give that a look. Improvements are pretty massive and noticeable. Basically, for every degree you adjust up, you gain roughly 5HP to the wheels. I felt it, plenty of others here have as well. You're basically setting the car to a setting where it is downright dangerous to fill your car up with anything less than 91. Since I fill my car up with only 93, this doesn't phase me.
Dangerous may be excessive, but under a 17-degree setting (stock is 15, but some Maximas are 13) you must only fill up using 91 or higher. Filling up with anything less will create pinging and you don't want that. So if you treat your Max right and always fill it up with 91 or over, then there will be no problems.

Ya, thanks Arnold - just got done reading all three pages of the earlier thread. My question is this, if it indeed has increased RPMs at 60mph from 1800 to 2100, would this not ill-affect the gas mileage, especially at interstate speeds of about 75-80mph?
Almost 99% of gas stations in Norman and the Oklahoma City metro area carry 91 only for their premium grade, but there is a Sinclair in town that carries 93 -- although I would prefer it be a Top Tier rated station with the 93, but whatever.
I might run over to my Nissan Independent Service Shop next week and see if they have any thoughts on doing this. I need to have them look at my CV axle anyway, so might as well.

Well...I've definitely noticed a slightly higher RPM rev. But I haven't seen any mileage issues, though. 200 miles and the needle is just a little below the half way mark. I'll probably be able to bang out another 100 miles before the gas light comes on -- and I'm in NYC.
Hmm, that's interesting -- the mileage really would seem like the only possible negative effect, granted that the driver will still be using 91+ octane. My mileage sucks anyway, so it probably can't get much worse.
Looks like I will be shooting for more HP next week, lol.

Thanks for all the info Arnold. Now that I will have to wait another couple of weeks to get the whole Y-pipe situation solved, I have the urge to do something to improve pickup on my AE. I am currently running the Budget test pipe/stock ypipe and the car feels more responsive in the mid-rpms and the exhaust sounds 500 times better, so I am happy for now.....BUT, since Thunder Valley day is comin up soon, I've gotta figure out something to get me into the 14's, especially since I don't want to get wasted in the brackets by my sis' WS-6.
Advanced timing it is!

this will not adversely affect gas mileage. if the car is driven the same as before then you should get better mileage as the motor is operating more efficiently. as a side note, the timing should not adjust your idle at all. that is unless you change your idle with the consult 2 but simply bumping the timing will not change idle unless you have another issue. i had my timing done a year and a half ago and i decided to bump my idle the day after because my udp was spinning too slow and was making noise.
Now, is Consult II the one you can use at Autozone, so basically you can do it yourself? ot does this have to be done at the dealer?
Also, when this is done and consiquently rpms change when drving at 60mph (NYPD-Arnold), does that mean you have Automatic tranny?
Thanks

i just had it done today.. i feel a differance in the mid range.. but the rpm from 5000-6000 just seems like it did before.. maybe my VAIS is shot .. maybe that will be the next Fix.. but my wheels will chrip at anything less than 25 mph if i floor it now.. feels good to me. It was a Good 20$ i handed the man to do it!

I30swimmer: I am in Tampa and would like to know which dealer and who did you speak to in getting your timing done. Can't find a Nissan dealer to do it, so I am willing to try an Infiniti dealer to get this done for me. Thanks.

Infinity dealer
Nissan tech did not want to do it for me, but Infinity tech would by appointment(30 min). What I have found out is that the techs that have been a round awhile know about this. Infinity tend to keep their techs longer.
With such a generic service request, won't the dealership try to charge you a full hour for labor? I just really doubt I can go into a local dealer and have them give me the time of day with a car that isn't broken.

Engine speed is a function of direct physical relationship with the transmission and final drive ratio. The only thing that will affect engine speed at any given speed is changing gear ratios or the diameter of the rims/tires.

One more question... What is the main difference between a gen 5 and gen 5.5?
I'm new to Max.org (owned for 4 weeks) but absolutely love it! I'm a 280ZX guy that I bought from a guy for $700, sold it to my daughter who sold it to my youngest son... and is still one of the funest cars I have ever driven... Anyhow, my wife totaled our Honda Civic EX Vtech
With the insurance payoff for the Honda we bought MAX! Back in the Nismo saddle again... I know, I know...

Jason (soonerfan) and me just got the timing advance done, for some under-the-table cash to one of the techs at a local dealer (who was quite nervous that his boss would see him doing it and give him trouble)
We stood there and watched him do the procedure (using the method above)...worked great. Both cars advanced to 17degrees and idle adjusted back to 625rpm (as I recall). Three techs were standing around watching, and two of them have been there for years and said they'd never done it.
Long story short:
What can I feel:
-the throttle response is definitely better, I can jerk the car around alot more on quick shifts (even with the ground wet from recent rain).
-power: can't tell.....yet. I'll have to take it on the highway tomorrow. Starts from zero showed nothing because of the wet roads, was just spinning the tires.
-gas mileage: I filled up a full tank right after I left the dealer, so will track it for a few tanks and see if I do any better than the 21-22mpg I got on the last 50 tanks or so....power and throttle response are nice, but I'd REALLY like to improve mileage with the cost of gas these days....
hopefully, Jason is doing the same with his 2002 max, so we can see if the payoff is better/worse for the 3.5 than it is for the 3.0.

Hey guys I have a 3.5 and I think I am going to try to get this done. You guys in Northern VA, what dealership did you get it done at? I am going to call but I hardly doubt that Pohanka in Fred is going to do it, as they are the most worthless POS around. Also, does anyone know if this is the same for the 2.5L Spec-V engine? My roomate has a 2002 and is curious if this can work sense those engines are similar?

I was about to write the exact same note. Changes in idle speed I can see; RPM changes with the drivetrain locked in and rolling at 60??? Don't understand that one.

Damn, I'd go down to Pohanka in Rednecksburg....my parents know Frank Pohanka.....I never knew he had a Nissan dealer down there, he's always driving that big-*** orange Avalanche
My gas milage DEFINATELY improved by advancing the timing to 17 degrees for my 03, from my experience so far ,and it has been about two months, I cannot tell how you will NOT notice a gas milage increase, just my opinion. Thats been the case with my ride since I have had this done, tank after tank since this was done, not much other then that.
U can try Courtesy Nissan on the corner of Hillsborough Ave and Dale Mabry. Ask for Lee. I went to Lokey Infinity in CLw off US 19. Ask for John Olivia but I think there gonna charge u for 1hr labor at either dealership. I don't know if any of the small performance shops can do it. U can try Zfever off of Lois Ave. Call them first.
