As asked above, does anyone know if this Timing Advance is possible with the Spec-V Sentra since the design of the 2.5 is similar?

Yes, you should be able to do this on the Spec's QR25DE. Just don't use crappy gas after you get your timing advanced.

I have a newbish question. In the VERY LONG thread about advancing the Max's timing, several people provided conflicting information about whether this mod would stick after an ECU reset.

I know that the 5th gen will retain its adjusted timing settings (unlike the 4th gen), and I know that disconnecting the battery will NOT wipe the timing settings. What I don't know is whether or not performing the ECU reset procedure listed in the stickies will wipe the timing adjustment. I had to do it on my car to clear an SES light a few days ago.

No. The ONLY (and I stress ONLY) way you can set the timing back to 15 degrees is using the Consult 2. ECU reset will not change the timing.

considering the consult 2 new costs about $6000...I seriously doubt even your best friend would ship one to you to borrow.

or "buy it now" on ebay for $6500

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

don't ask the "dealer" to do it....go find a tech out back of the dealership smoking a cigarette and slip him some cash to do it. The service managers will NOT do it for you....find a tech, bring him the instructions at the beginnning of this thread, and he'll be happy to make $30-40 cash for 5 minutes of work.

even if they went for $1500, how many people here would buy one? Not many. It's easier to pay a tech $30 to do it, unless you plan on using it ALOT!!

if only i COULD pay a tech $30 to do it! where i live, the lowest of 4 dealers (including an infiniti dealer, which btw, said they could do it on a nissan) was $78....i'm just gonna wait and see if i get more mods so that it'll help more and will make the 'most' of my money...

$78?? You are obviously asking at the service desk (to one of the service team managers), right?

Like I said, go around the back of the garage, or catch one of the "real" mechanics/techs (not the service managers) out back taking a smoke break or taking a car out...then slip him some cash and have him do it "off the books" (i.e. no receipt or anything).....

hmm...couldn't that potentially result in that tech getting fired or given other consequences?? i would feel really guilty if something like that were to happen...but you're right, i did ask the service manager and i'm not sure he even know WTF i was talking about....he just pulled $78 somewhere out of his head..all the other service managers seemed to know what i was talking about, but one of them had the nerve to tell me it would cost $114!! i told him that it was absolutely rediculous that plugging a little machine in for 3 minutes could possibly cost that much and walked out of there REAL fast...oh well...the next time i'm at the service center, i'll try your advice....i don't really want to go to that hell hole just for that, because all i get there is grief...

The guy who did ours was a bit nervous, and then he told us that if one of the service managers came in while he was doing it to tell him that we were his cousins and he was just helping us out - Which was pretty funny since we were two fairly tall white guys and he was pretty short and at least partially-hispanic

of course, the techs know how to do things on the "down low" for some cash...

no, nothing should happen. you're just gonna not be able to take advantage of the advanced timing settings......your knock sensor will retard everything until you get good gas

Thanks, I'm gonna look into this. I'm about to change out the plugs and look into some other things as far as tune-up goes as well, would it matter if I did the advance before or after the tune-up?

I visited my stealership (Hightstown Nissan) and the manager told me they couldnt do it and if they did it would reset.....

I told them ......... and when they were able to performe mech. on my car as i request, i would bring it in, but until then i would only be buying parts..

I had a tech check it out at the dealership and it was at 15. Thats kinda weird. Maybe TS does all their timing changes directly on the ignition map and doesnt mess with that. I had them push it up to 17 and as far as I can tell there is no pinging. I will have to look up some sound files for pinging to see if maybe I am not listening for the right thing. However I really dont hear anything that sounds like a knock or a ping. I even specifically went to a rather steep hill and went up it in 3rd gear at 2100rpm and halfway through gave about 3/4 throttle... nothing. If I am not getting any ping then that kind of proves that TS really is hedging their bets on the timing advance. Of course they only recommend 91+ and I always run 93 though.

probably only does the AFR then, there isnt much of a way for us to tell besides looking at your current setting, unchanged at 15, right? ts is shady

Bgates: they retained the KS function, so if it detects slight pinging (which we cant hear) it will select a less agressive timing map. TS did in fact make a more agressive map, but only at WOT and beyond 3800rpm (vias changeover point).

Ighetto: TS doesnt touch the base timing, reason being is that there has been no proof to show that there are gains made by doing it. Members on this board have said so, however have not shown any proof of such. Please dont comment on things you havent researched thoroughly

You realize you are talking to the person who went out and was the first one to have this done and had a huge hand in the development of this upgrade?
